The problem is that anyone can do it simply by connecting the gps to the pc is enough, it does not even need a good e-mail account, just that it looks good.
Anyone getting random numbers can access their subscription or another and get the map activated, of course the activation is only for a GPS, but you can get the code meta map.

Um! This thread has lots of information that is relevant to my scenario! But I just want to reconfirm!
1. I have purchased a Start 20 from a person which has lifetime map updates for India.
2. This person has very kindly shared with me his TomTom account details.
3. To play absolutely safe, I should simply log in to TTHome with this person's account details and change the username and password to my own (but not the email I use with my other TomTom account).
4. Save. Exit.
5. My lifetime maps should now continue as usual?
Have I got this right? Phew!
Thanks, guys! You're beautiful. Yes - you reading this! :-)

Sadly not that easy with your NAV3 (Start 20) device which doesn't use TTHome but needs the unbreakable MyDriveConnect, see
However you should just be able to re-register the device in your name/email/password (similarly to this thread but via MDC) to continue getting the maps as it's the device they're registered to/licensed for, not the owner

Unless the previous owner wanted to pi55 you off by changing it himself? Suggest you DO re-register it once rec'd/tested etc

That is a good point. But same as you, I am nervous about losing the lifetime updates! So to restart this entire thread - are you absolutely certain I will not lose my lifetime updates if I simply reset the device and reregister it in my name?
PS: This is a very gentle person I bought from - chances of him doing something funny are little to none. Why would simply changing the associated email address/password not work in my case? You're beautiful. Yes - you reading this! :-)

I'd say you're perfectly safe doing that but just to put your mind at rest, ask exactly that question in the TT forum
PS once rec'd, login using HIS details THEN change the details to suit you is the way to do it.

I don't understand neither - first be sure Device is really registered to account (see pic "devs"), then - change your e-mail/pass (better to do it one-by-one - see pic "pass") .
But to ask Support - not bad idea...
