    Default beware latest Garmin Chartplotter updates!

    found this thread regarding the new Garmin Oct 30/17 update. Since older chartplotters where not included, this may only affect the newer models:

    [quote] As it turns out, Garminís recent software update added software to detect SD cards with GARMIN charts that have been copied (to prevent piracy).

    Chris Sullivan talked to Garminís techs at the Ft Lauderdale show and relayed this information to me. Carl Nelson also was on the right track that it was something different than GARMIN wanting to disable maps solely to sell products. Thanks to both for helping me sort this out.

    I think I must have backed up my original SD card and had the backup in my chartplotter. I put the original SD card back in the chartplotter and no message that the map would be disabled next January.

    Totally support GARMIN in their effort to eliminate piracy of their software.

    ========================

    With the release of the Active Captain app, GARMIN also released an update for their chartplotters dated Oct 30.

    I updated yesterday and received a message stating map would be disabled Jan 29, 2018.

    I also downloaded GARMIN Express onto my Lenovo computer. This computer app gives you the ability to download maps for your chartplotter. When I went to view the maps, it was $100 for the 2017 version (I have the 2015 version).

    It appears I do not have much of a choice other than to acquire the new maps. My next concern is whether this will be the new modus operandi for GARMIN (to force purchase of charts) or whether this is a one-off exercise

    Am I interpreting this correctly? Anyone else gone through these steps? [quote]
