Hello Ill try to keep this short to explain my situation. Ive been making snowmobile trail maps with GPX2IMG and MapSource for my Nuvi 1490 for years. I bought a larger Garmin, Nuvi 65 LM and attempted to load my custom maps on it, which the name shows up in map list but does not display.
I am totally NEW to this idea of modifying the firmware so I really do not understand what some things mean. Sounds like depending on the model it may or may not have the restriction on displaying unlicensed maps and it may be just a setting.
THis is the first few lines of the GarminDevice.xml file, so is the hardware ID 1749 and does it need the firmware updated or something less?
<PartNumber>006-B1749-00</PartNumber>
<SoftwareVersion>450</SoftwareVersion>
<Description>nüvi 65</Description>
</Model>
Thank you for your help!

Hello thank you for your help, so I downloaded the file, as it said but the instructions are a bit confusing to me. There appears to be three sets of instructions in the 105 post. I did the first one that says to extract it to a new microSD card, I put in GPS and turned it on. The word loader did appear at the top for a short time but then went to the garmin warning page and I agreed. It then looked normal. I powered off, pulled out microSD and put in my other mSD that has my maps on it but it did not display. I checked the root of garmin drive but it did not have the 154.bin file so I assume it did not work. I tried it again but the loader msg doesn't appear again. There are two other sets of instructions, Method 1 and Method 2 in the 105 post, but they appear to be for updating the GPS firmware?
Thank You ~ PHil

FireFox58:
I appreciate your response, I did not know that Garmin update allows me to download and install only Mexico.
I also ignored that there should not be another Map with the same or greater coverage in the device memory (folder \ .System).
Again I appreciate your guidance, greetings.

Are you sure Device was FULLY OFF before apply Patch? You have to press and hold Power button to completely switch Off Device.
Verify the Firmware version in the Info page, it should be 5.61. If it is NOT the Patch was not applied.
Yes, the two other sets of instructions, Method 1 and Method 2 in the 105 post are concerning Firmware Update of already patched Devices

The word "Loader" appearing means that the flash was initiated.
The nonvol region backup is saved on the CARD not the Garmin drive.
When the card has been read by the device there will be a new file name "update.log" will appear in the 1947 folder and its presence precludes further flashing attempts until it's removed from there. Please post it's contents. Also check that a file the file named GUPDATE.GCD isn't in the device's [usually hidden] .System folder in case it's interfered with the flashing process.

Hello so I may not have been fully powering it off, I was unplugging it and waiting. I first checked the firmware version and it is 5.61 so slightly different then what you indicate it needs to be. I force it off as you said, put mSD card in and powered it on, I did not see it say loader at the top of the screen. After it was fully on to the menu I powered it off, took the mSD card out and connected it to my PC and the BULK_154.bin file was in the root of the GPS drive. Its size is 2048Kb. I put my mSD card in with a known working map I made (works in my Nuvi 5in GPS) and checked and the maps are selected but when viewing only the Garmin Topo layer is working and not my custom trails map..
Should I downgrade the firmware to 5.60 and try again? If so is how to do that on this thread? I saw a link to a /perry site for firmware versions but I did not see where they were on that site.
Thank You ~ Phil

@mpilihp
Version 5.61 shows that the patch has indeed been successful, if original (unmodified) latest fw was loaded it would read Version 5.60. Sometimes custom maps meant for outdoor devices don't work in dedicated automotive on-road devices. The Topo likely has Unicode (Code Page 65001) so if it's working the fw has been patched. I'm thinking the other device your custom map works in is not another automotive device but an outdoor one, correct?
