Default Unable to Store Settings - File access error

Has anybody come across this error message on their Tomtom. This is appearing on my Tomtom One Xl. The SD Card has all the correct Maps and Nav and works fine but every time it switches on it has to go thro' the Set Up stages of Country, Voice, Map Colours etc. which is really annoying. I don't think it is anything to do with the SD Card as I have tried another one and it does exactly the same thing.

How about the lock switch of your SD card ?
It seems to me that your device is not able to write or update your mapsettings.cfg

No the lock switch is ok. I have an old SD card which I tried and it still came up with the same error. The mapsettings.cfg is on the SD Card isn't it.

Normally the mapsettings.cfg can be found on the SD card, but if you use internal and external simultaneously, which is not possible with all TomTom's, it could also be in the internal.

You could test with a random empty SD card formatted FAT32, place it in the device, hard reset and start and see if a mapsettings.cfg is being written.
That will probably not be the case and then put a navcore on it, for example 9.510 and do the same trick again.

Now definitely a mapsettings.cfg should be written and you should end with the error message no map found.

Depending on the Bootloader, make sure you use a SD card up to a maximum of 2GB for certainty

I followed all the suggestions and when I entered the Navcore and hard reset it it went to the start up screen ie Country language, voices, etc again and the error message appeared again. (Unable to Store Settings). I can't see any mapsettings.cfg. Should it be listed as a seperate entry.

What happens when you start up without SD card? Same error?.
You can try a clearflash from

    whitout SD card.

When I start without an SD Card it just comes up with the screen showing it needs an SD Card to be entered. I will try a clearflash after I've tried pe1agp's suggestion if that doesn't work.

After thinking about this as there is no accessible Internal Memory a clearflash would not be something I could try.

    I would try it anyway.
    1. Clearflash clears your flash/cache memory and not your internal memory.
    2. I think it won't hurt your device as more as it is now.

It looks like you are having a problem with your internal memory.
Is it possible to access the device from a PC without a SD card in it?
If so you could format the internal memory to see if that works.

By the way, what are the first 2 digits of the serial number of your device? You can find that mostly at the bottom of you device.
    In my

, you can find some details about you device. For instance how big the internal memory is.

So you indeed have a problem writing to your SD card without using the SD card, most likely the same problem.
But you could always try it out by removing the SD card, navcore in the internal and doing the same actions as you have done before.
If it is also not possible to write to the internal memory you have a serious problem to which I have no answer.
The mapsettings.cfg stores what you have to fill in each time and can be found in the same folder as the map.
This is also usually not compatible with a new map.

I'm thinking about whether it makes sense to make mapsetings.cfg for you with settings that you would do yourself, I still have an old One Xl here and I wonder if we can temporarily fool your TomTom .

That would not have solved the problem because there is constant writing to those mapsettings.cfg if you drive, every specified address will be there for example.

For storing addresses, I do have a solution in the form of a POI file that is always compatible with any new map.

PM me what you input all at the moment, then I let my old One Xl create a mapsettings.cfg, you can also send it to my private email address if that is more convenient, I will put the created file on my own server and send you a link.
