What we should be doing is telling these companies what we need and want. They seem to have forgotten that

They (certainly TT) don't give a to55 about what their customers want/need/wish for or request!
Just see the continuous criticism (and their total indifference to this) of their products on their forum
BLOODY PATHETIC (and if you dare publicly criticise them as I've done under a few different names in the past, you get banned; for speaking the truth FFS!
PS, nothing better to do with your time Nick?

I think it is only fair to match like for like, so I will just use units without SD cards in them next week. Both set as Europe, so running as basic units. Will keep informed

That's why I never signed in there. Too many sycophants and too many people whose only vocation is to gush over TomTom...
P.S: We have a word in german for these people, who always find everything OK: "Lob-Hudler". No better translation found as "gush over"...Last edited by Alfred_ML; 26th May 2019 at 08:39 PM.

I agree, they do not, and it is one reason that they are losing so many units to others.
Having said that, I have be running the GO5200 with the Garmin one. I prefer the map of the Garmin and some of the comments.
As for routes to avoid traffic jams, Garmin sucks. TT is a lot better.
Althought TT is much better and reroutes literally live, Garmin waits until in a jam and then thinks about a reroute...A bit useless really. It would anger me as I entered a jam, for Garmin to say, there is a jam ahead, rerouting. Yes I know, I am in it. TT says traffic delayes ahead and reroutes live, so misses many, but not ALL.
In fairness I do know where the jams are likely to be at times of the day anyway.
Using is a great bonus that TT has the Garmin has not
Although I prefer overall the TT, I really like some of the Garmin information comments.
This Garmin unit has a cam inbuilt which records onto a SDHC card. They say up to 64GB so SDXC really. Comes with 8GB card and maybe fine for many. I have tried using a 64GB and a 128GB and 256GB and works with all of them, but takes ages to accept them. And that is every time unit turned on, regardless of size if recording cam. Fine withough, but then why record cam on an SD card? My help for use in an accident I have not tried without a SDCard May make things better, I do not know. This is first time of using. Comments later
On thing I really hate about the Garmin is the time to set up, although easy.
Every time I use it, it takes forever to start, even on same route.
TT turns on immediately and remembers things, like going to work, home etc. y/n spot on. can send route prior to unit via app
yes I think TT is better, but it costs a lot more
Garmin is ok, and cheap and fine does all TT does, but not as well. It is more like looking at an A2Z atlas and that I actually prefer, but routing sucks - BIG TIME. Google is better. Speed cams are fine. Maps upto date.
Both TT and Garmin seem to suck at closed roads. For that, neither are good, in fact, they are really BAD.
How can you save time using a closed road as there is no traffic there. Off course no traffic, the road is closed Doh.
This is where AI comes in.............but that is a new commentLast edited by the Maverick; 25th May 2019 at 02:24 PM.

Well Dave, you know I am usesed to pi33ing off TT. but it is constructive critism mostly
So far in test TT wins if you not poor and Garmin if you are poor
But there are more tests to do, and I have a feeling TT will find hard to beat Garmin
If it was routing alone TT wins, the other things, they actually lose a lot and by a wide amount
Al and I do not care. We want the best, and I think for the least cost
So that is again something to consider
cost over benefit
benefit or need
what you actually need
and think about what you do not need
that helps in getting the unit you want
amd not the best or most expensive unit that offers a lot of what you do not need
Here is a clue. Get from A to B quickest without delays accurately and legally
So set a location and drive and be confident, arrive on time
All these other features do not matter unless you want them to
Now is the question, which is better for your needs, and at what costLast edited by the Maverick; 25th May 2019 at 04:13 PM.

Good evening to all, if you allow me I would like to have my opinion on this topic
Premise:
TomTom had the advantage of bringing the "Navigator" within everyone's reach, making it cheap and widespread.
Garmin is Garmin, it's the "History" of GPS. When the first TT was released, Garmin was already 20 years building GPS devices
Navigation Features:
I anticipate that my experiences with TomTom are limited, in any case in those few times the Device has really risked ending up outside the window ("go back as soon as you can" continuously), a total disaster.
Garmin has always brought me to my destination, and I repeat "always" in every situation.
Customization:
TomTom is certainly more customizable than Garmin, I admit that. Garmin is more difficult to customize
Both have the possibility to insert personal POIs from external sources, obviously with different formats and methods.
Maps Update:
Garmin is certainly more simple to update (each Map is a single file, simpler than that ...)
Quality and quantity of maps available:
TT has TeleAtlas, Garmin has Navteq. One has more coverage in certain areas, the other in other areas. They are objectively equivalent
I have to add that on Garmin you can use Maps from many other suppliers (OSM for example) and has practically Worldwide coverage, even for the most extreme and remote areas. TT I don't know.
The comparison obviously stops at road maps because with other types of maps there is no comparison.
On Garmin I can use TOPO Maps of any level of detail, and also Nautical Maps. TT is a roadonly device, a big limitation
Prices:
I would say they are similar, with the same performance
Conclusions:
Garmin all my life!

I use both types, each has its own strengths and weaknesses, I think TomTom is more accurate in calculating and recalculating the route, sometimes Garmin creates incomprehensible paths
