use this if you are not be able to download maps
1 - install original (from google-play)
2 - launch app, go though settings, wait till list of maps appears. Don't switch off app at this point!
3 - launch file manager, navigate to /storage/emulated/0/android/obb/com.tomtom.gplay.navapp and copy it to different folder.
4 - now exit GO, and uninstall it from app-manager.
5 - install patched version from here. Don't launch it!
6 - back to file manager - find your saved com.tomtom.gplay.navapp and put it back to /storage/emulated/0/android/obb/
7 - now launch app, go to list of maps - and download the map(s) you want.
if you do not have the obb file you can find one on google, hope you will get it work again.

Thanks for your help.
First problem, after installing the original version from the play store ant open it, I have the message "unable to connect to tomtom".
However no trace of previous installation on my device.
Can you download a new map with version 1.17? To try a test.

@ruudjuh80: no, definitly doesn't work with that patched 1.17.1.

According to other report (also based on Play Store reviews for the original app) the problem isn't the version 1.17.1 (both original and patched), it is with TomTom (maybe their servers?). So neither original nor the patched version works well.
Best advice for now is to NOT update and wait for TomTom to fix it. I'm sure Dfox then come up with another patched version if that is needed

@ors3l; no 1.17.1 patched one is fully wrong don't use this patch.
dfox knows about it and he works it out to make a fix.
@cadkey; i've had the same problem with the orginal app from Google playstore, don't know what the problem is, i take my Phone back to factory settings and it works fine now 1.17.
Only you have to make sure about the OBB file is in the map of your Phone other wise you are not be able to download any maps.

@Ruudjuh80:
Thank you.
Last night nothing worked for me, not even 1.17 original for testing, blocking when downloading the map.
I will redo a test with the original 1.17 then the 1.17 dfox and obb file
