Well ive been using gps's now sence they came out for us. They used to not have a map n u just put waypoints n made ur own. I now find cheapest thing to use is a cheap decent android smartfone, use it with airplane mode on if u dont want to pay for service. Add topopro app with wifi for ur topo maps. 12 bucks to buy for life. That allows u to cache a large area of a area for ur map. U can also cache google maps for offline use.

Now u have a gps with a bigger screen for say under 50 bucks. Cheaper that buying a gps n u get to use it for other stuff on wifi.
