    Might be worth a reset


    There are three different ways to reset the Garmin Zumo 550, the “Soft Reset”, the “Hard Reset” and battery removal.


    • Soft reset: If your unit "freezes" you can restart it by turning it on while pressing the [ + ] button (top left hard button). This will force it to restart. No data is lost
    • Take the battery out: For some issues it is necessary to take out the battery for at least 10 minutes. This is often the cure for the "dead Zumo syndrome" and no data will be lost.
    • Hard reset (total user data delete)
      • Before you start:
        • Connect the unit with your computer over the USB connector.
        • Do not press "cancel" when it makes the gpx file
        • If you have an archive with tracks ( /Garmin/GPX/Archive/ ....gpx) copy all of your archives to your computer by hand.

      • To perform the reset:
      • Turn off the unit
      • Keep your finger firmly pressed on the bottom right corner of the touch screen
      • While keeping it pressed, turn the unit back on
      • After a little while you get a question on the screen "do you want to erase all user data" > Select "Yes"
      • All data like routes and waypoints, plus your personal settings are now reset.
      • After start-up you can re-import all routes and favourites again, and/or place the archive files back on the device.

    Hi! Thanks for trying to help!

    I'm checking for GPS update each year but you are right, there haven't been one in many years indeed but I always check just in case. I do have the v5.00 version.

    I've tried soft and hard reset too, just in case. No change

    I've tried with your Canada & Borders version and tomojure's gmapprom.img file from the first post (both renamed gmapsupp.img) but it still doesn't work. Very strange.

    I did notice something however. The Zumo 550 is normally displaying the street names in all upper case letters. I may be imaginating things here, but it is almost like the newer maps (well prior to 2022.10 at least) are kinda "hard coded" with upper and lower cases letters and the Zumo cannot handle this. I've got really no way to backup my claim tho, just a feeling, hence why I asked in my original post if Garmin didn't change something recently about their maps.

    I don't have a zumo 550 any more so I can't simulate your problem. I did try a few other younger devices and all displayed street names correctly .maybe try choosing another language ???





    Edit : Comparing 2022.25 NT & 2023.10 NT I don't see anything obvious ???

    OK, I've tried something else.

    I just remembered that I always download NT version of the maps (I'm in Canada). When re-reading this thread title, I've noticed that "NT" was missing.... It might just be my problem. I'm pretty sure tho that I've tried other map versions from the same thread that were supposed to be "NT". Just to be sure I'm downloading as of now Kilroy's map from post #2 to test this out, but it is a very slow download. I'll report back later to if this version is working or not.

    But at the same time, I downloaded Fared123's City Navigator North America NT 2022.25 FID 9362 and surprise, this version worked flawlessly as the street names are reading fine with it. This version will be fine if I can't make 2023.10 work.

    Agima, Interesting problem. I have a 2009 GL1800 Goldwing, with built in Garmin Nav. I was using 2022.1 (downloaded from here last year), with street names displaying no problem and firmware 5.10 and now loading a map set from the mapsource download I have the same issue as you, first letter and dots instead of street name. I image the guts of my gps are likely similar to yours, not likely they designed a whole new one from the ground up for this.

    Interesting update, I have a Etrex Venture CX and loaded some maps on it, and same thing with the street names. Used the same mapsource files, (which display fine on the computer) and it worked fine also from 2022.10 from last year.
    Maybe this mapsource edition is the issue not sending proper streetnames?

    I did try with a different language (french prior hard reset and english after) but it didn't change anything.

    After the long download time, I tried Kilroy's map (from post #2) but street names aren't displaying correctly.

    I'm not sure either why 2022.25 NT works but 2023.10 NT is not. Not a big deal for now, I'll come back in a few months for the next version to try it out. Something might have change in the way Garmin are making the maps and my Zumo 550 can't cope with that. Who knows!? Thanks for the help tho, it appreciated!
