Default Instructions for updating Mazda NB1 navcore and map

The NB1 discussion thread rambles for over 50 pages, with no definitive 'how-to' for beginners like me. So, after much struggling, and help from other forum members, I wrote my own instructions! (Now revised to 'Issue 1.2'.)

If any experts have suggestions for corrections or improvements, please contact me.

If any newbies have trouble updating their system while following these instructions, please contact me and I'll try to improve the instructions.

Thanks for the instructions. I have a few comments:
1 - If you are using proper NB1 maps you do not need to delete the arp*.dat files. It does make a small difference. If you delete the files you may find your Home moves a few metres from where you expect it. I've no idea on the effect on navigation. If you use non-NB1 maps you must delete the files.
2 - I am not sure about the postcode bit. I recently looked at the files in the downloaded map and they were the same as the /zip files. It can probably be skipped.
3 - Simba and Poshea's Navcores are probably slightly different. I *think* Simba patched his to enable TMS traffic data to be received in Australia using one of the providers there. Similarly I modified mine to enable it in the UK
4 - Sometimes Fastactivate can be slow to update to the latest metas when they become public. It is quite easy to hand-edit the meta.txt file to add any missing entry using information in the Blowfish/Meta codes threads.
5 - Your settings are held in loopdir.ex3. This is an ext3 image file and to look into it you'd need something which can mount the file as an image. Linux can do this with "mount -o loop loopdir.ex3" (you may need to also select the filesystem type). Then using standard Linux methods you can explore the file. It can be helpful because some things will erase your favourites and home. Home is easy to reset from the SatNav, favourites is not. Really this is a somewhat advanced topic.

    Nick,

    Thanks for your feedback.

    1. My problem with "using proper NB1 maps" is: how to identify them! Alfred often referred to NB1 maps, but didn't explain (in terms I could understand) how one knows which are NB1 maps. There's nothing in the Compatible Chart or the Thread Finder pages that indicates 'NB1'.

    2. The postcode bit was just pulled from someone's comment in the discussion thread, so I have no way of verifying it. I can delete that mention if you think it's misleading or unnecessary.

    3. My understanding (from poshea's post in the discussion thread) is that poshea's navcore is just simba's with the Australian traffic enabled.

    4. Being a raw novice, I haven't yet tried to find details about the 'nuts and bolts' of hacking meta codes. Perhaps I should have a look and see if I can handle it.

    5. I remember seeing someone (perhaps you?) mention that settings can be restored by copying back your old loopdir directory. If it's just a matter of copying loopback.ex3 (which I presume you meant) back into the loopdir folder, I should mention that in the notes section of my doc.

1 - In the Thread Finder page just search for NB1
2 - I don't know for the moment. It is an observation I made with the 990 maps. I'm on holiday at the moment so have not updated to 995. It *may* be that without the /zip files I can only use the first four characters of the postcode (a vague old memory). I'll test when I'm back in the UK.
    3 - Yes, mine too.
4 - It was just a bit of extra info. I had to do it with the 895 maps as Fastactivate would not update meta.txt
5 - I'm not sure you can copy back in the old loopdir folder or file. I think the only thing you can do is mount the loopdir.ex3 file as an image (so it is like its own disk). Within that image you'll find a whole filesystem. Those individual files can be restored from previous versions. This is really an advanced topic as is patching navcore for TMC.

    Nick,

    1. Ah yes, now I see the 'NB1' maps. Problem was, I was only ever searching for Australia maps, and they never seemed to be available as NB1, so I didn't notice the NB1 maps. I've amended my instructions to note the arp*.dat issue.

    2. I won't change this section till I hear your test results.

    4. I do remember reading that some people had problems with FastActivate not working, and EasyActivate was suggested as an alternative. Sounds like this might be a fairly rare failure, so to keep it simple for beginners I think I'll leave it 'as is' for now. If anyone strikes a problem, they'll post on the discussion thread, and someone can steer them to a solution.

    5. Here too I think I'll steer clear of this tricky area. People can do what I did and just write down their original settings, and re-enter them manually if the new installation restores defaults. (Or they could use their smartphone to photograph the various setup screens, for their record.)

Thanks very much for your help.

    Daniel

The 995_8530 are the NB1-maps of the current release, the 990_8351 of the last release.
Since a few releases the mapchart has a new structure: first the High-Level, then Carminat, then Low-Level, then NB1, then another "High-Level" for devices without speech-control, then other Low-Level and at last the Truck-Europe.

P.S: But why these discussions in the TUT thread? Only a few days, and we have page 49 in the TUT again...

    Alfred,

It's not that I don't trust you! It's just that, until Nick pointed out the NB1 notation for some maps in the Thread Finder, I couldn't find any way to tell if a map was for NB1 in those two threads mentioned.

As for the layout of the Compaitible Charts, I understand what you're saying. I just think it would be nice if those charts had another row of headings explaining what the groups of columns are for, rather than newcomers having to rely on advice from good people such as yourself as to what the columns mean. But I know the whole effort that goes into them is voluntary, and people are busy.

And I guess why these discussions are happening here is that this is where I posted my beginners' instructions (at biggerdave's request), and people are just 'replying' to that post here. I'd be quite happy to move them back to the Discussions thread.

    Daniel

These continuing "discussions" in this thread are (hopefully) just helping/clarifying your much appreciated efforts to simplify the how-to instructions so are OK to keep as long as it doesn't run to 54 pages & more than 500 posts!!

Once those who know all about the Mazda devices are happy (by not pointing out any further errors or omissions) then maybe I'll tidy up this particular thread

    Thanks so much!
Very helpful,I print out the pdf and follow it point by point successfully.
I've some issues for my second update with another map, but problem must comes from map.

I see some small incoherence in the pdf, I'll forward you by MP some corrections for 1.3.
From my side, I think it should be easier for noobs to have an explanation with original windows explorer, I can change your file in this way, you will just need to print it in pdf.
    What do you think?
