Default Some general help on updating and deciding on a Navcore

It still seems to be confusing for some new users to gather all the info they need and I though I try to put it simple.

    1. not always is the latest available Navcore the best choise for a device, especially for older devices or problematic device (more later).
    2. the bootloader is never the cause of any problem other than a device not being able to use SDHC cards!
    3. everything is possible but not everything must work!
    4. if you want to use maps for free you must have a patched Navcore, it won't work on an unmodified device!

Having said that, what is possible/usefull and why should I update or not?
The question is not the easiest to answer as everyone differs in the needs and what he might prefer.
But as a general rule I can say that even the oldest device is being able to use the latest V9 Navcore - if done correctly.
You have to know that Emulation means Emulation and nothing else - it is not possible to get any new features onto a device that are purely hardware based.
Example: You install a suitable NC and map on a ONE first edition and want to use the spoken address input : in won't work because there is no microphone on the device! Same if you want to use hands free calling...
The emulation of a device is what most noobs refer to as an update to a better model, but that is not true as you now know...
Only the appearance and menu style can be "imported" but never any hardware based features.
The main reason for using a Navcore that is not supposed to be used on a device is the need for maps with more features or the "need" to have a devcie that looks like something better.
The next one would be that you are to use computervoices and spoken street names on devices that usually won't support that.

    What is the difference between NC 7.xx, 8.xx, 9.xx and why can't I use a V10/11/12 Navcore?
The V7 NC's were the first "workable" Navcores and TT stopped at 7.903 for some devices like the X10 series. They still support the lates maps but only the most basic form and without computer voices.
V8 NC's offered a better map view, better "smoothing" of the vector map data and for many device computer voices.
Some features like the auto-turn-on with the ignition however haven been discontiued.
The V9 Navcore offer a 3 pane status bar in most emulations giving the user more information ans some other minor improovements.
Main reason to use a V9 is that some full featured maps now only work on Navcores higher than 9.2xx
The V10 NC's (and all higher) can't be used on older devices as they use a complete encrypted Linux system and no longer the user accessable FAT file system. This is the reason why those NC's can't be patched or use downloaded maps.

Nice, but I still don't know what Navcore to choose....
Again, this is up to you, the 8.4xx NC's are good and stable for most older devices and offer all you need, apart from using maps that require a V9 NC.
However, features are a must have these days and there has no further development for older Navcores on TT's side or the side of the "hackers".
Since DSA8310 got his DSA tool to a good workable stage I provided Navcores based on that tool that work fine on almost any device.
    To make it short:
GO630, Rider, Start and the X10 series can be tricky, the in-car-system only use the original Navcore all other devices can use the latest NC version if done correctly with the DSA tool or if the correct version out of my collections is used.
The above problematic devices will be able to use other Navcores (apart from the Rider and in car systems), but can require patience and testing of several different Navcores to find the one that works best.

How do I add computer voices?
If you never had them and TT Home won't offer them you have to download them manually or use a fullbackup that includes the vocie you seek.

    What about Home?
TT Home is only really needed if you have to secure your device with a code or feel the need to download the latest map share data.
Quick fix data can be downloaded manually and with new maps every 3 months - how needs Home

    Patching/Activating:
If you go the illegal way and want to use a downloaded map you have to activate it and your Navcore need to be patched!
All SE Navcores, Navcores created with the DSA tool and the Navcore I offer for download are all patched and must not be patched again!
Only original Navcore that you got on your device or as an update through Home need patching to use downloaded maps.

To successfully get all running you need a suitable tool, like FastActivate, a ttgo.bif (in the root of your device), a map that is compatible with your Navcore version, and most importantly these days a so called meta code for the map.
If any of the above is missing or not in the right version it won't work!
In all cases so far the problem was at user's end, so read carefully all instructions provided in a thread/postings and make sure you got it - than it will be very easy!

    Emulations:
An emulation forces the device into thinking it would be an etirely different device offering you the same look on the screen-but it won't add any missing hardware!
But if you have only a simple ONE you make it look like a Start or even the latest X50 device apart from the small screen.
Depending on the hardware an emulation is also responsible for functions like the day night switching or hands free calling.
As an example: on a GO730 you can not the spoken address feature in certain emulations as the device using this emulation by default has no microphone or TT disable the feature.

What if I still have questions?
Apart from here you can use the search function to check if your problem was already discussed in an existing thread or at least use a thread related to the problem on a different device/Navcore version.
If you ask for help be specific and provide as much detail as possible!
We are here to help but can only do so if you are willing to do the same.
In your initial request always include what model, Navcore, emulation and map you use, adding the bootloader version can be helpful too.
Never post any personal data like your serial number oder device ID!
Try to avoid useless thank you postings and use the button instead, this helps to keep a thread clean and reading it much easier for the next user in a few months time.

The Go730 has a microphone and can be used when the emulation support it!
