Default Some simple noobs tips for updating a TT

1: If you have a new TT models that uses MyTomtom (in general all new TT devices you find in the shops now) you are stuck to what TT offers and have to pay for maps.
2: In case you do own a proper TT that can be accessed the usual way with the Windows Explorer can can keep reading

One of the most confusing things to be the bootloader, so if your TT connects to the PC and has no transfer problems (stopping during filetransfers) simply leave it alone.
Only if you have an old TT with original stuff on it you might need support for SDHC cards.
SDHC is supported from bootloader 5.5022 but I recommend the 5.5112.
Problems with your device that are not related to USB transfer or reading SDHC cards are not related to your bootloader!

    Terms you should know:
Navcore : TT calls it "Application" in Home, this is the operating system of your TT
Bootloader : as the name suggests it contains the data for the permanent flash - same as the bios of your PC
ALG, IQ Routes, HNR, CS Speech, ASR : I make it short... ALG give you the nice pictures on the map showing the road signs and turn offs. IQ Routes calculates routes on based on known traffic contitions at the given time of the day. HNR is housnumbers for regions that either use a postcode system for addresses or has a dedicated system for providing accurate location data. CS Speech is for the computer voices to know the map and road commands, ASR is for voice input at the address search.
Firmware, Jailbreaking, hacking, cracking: nothing from the TT world, so avoid these terms
Activating, patching: We activate a map and in order for that to work we need a patched Navcore! There are several tools available I recommend FastActivate, Easyusetoll Frontend by Cyber-Crack, Alberts Easy Activator and the orinal Easyusetools by TT and the patcher from yDG - Use Google if you have to !
Meta, code, DCT, ttgo.bif : maps, official speedcams and some voices need an activation to work. The meta code is what give the Activator the right info for the map, together with the infos from the ttgo.bif it can activate your map. If a .dct file with the name of the map was created inside the map folder than your map will work.

    Addressing problems on a device:
    1. If are totally new to this and your TT stipped working: Don't panik!!!! You can not "brick" a TT unless you are a professional and know exactly what you have to do to break it.
    2. Don't panik!!
    3. Since you found this forum I guess you don't care about keeping it original, if your device still is in that state please make a full backup using Windows explorer - make sure hidden and system files are visible!
    4. You can always try the official way of fixing: Make backup, delete all but the folders "voices" "LoquendoTTS" your map folder and the file ttgo.bif in the root. Now connect to Home and repeat the update process untill Home does no longer offer updates for it.
    5. Still not happy? Try our way of fixing: Check for the latest available Navcore version (at this time either the 9.486 - 9.485 or the 9.700 (truck).
Read the instructions provided in the thread carefully and follow them on how to install!
Download a full featured map that covers your area of choice [and has a meta code posted!!!) and activate using FastActivate (check first for the latest version!!!).

What is the latest/best Navcore for my device and other blah blah...:
The latest and best is always what Home offer for your device and nothing else!!!
All other Navcores can work but might have limitations or even work so badly that you don't want to use them - so it is backup, test and confirm in all non-Home ways.

How to address a problem in the forum:
    1. Things like "it does not work", "need help" or "urgent" is nothing that should be in a thread title or request.

Always post the full details, errors as they are displayed on the device and include all infos about the map, device and what exactly you have done!
    2. Before you consider to open a new thread for your problem consider the forum and Google search.
Use an existing topic if possible and check if your problem was not already discussed/solved!
A title like "My new map does not work" is neither helpful nor needed as this topic is covered hundreds of times and always it goes back to user error - this is an example only!
Be specific and include all details about the device, map and your problem in general, posting the contents of the ttgo.bif is helpful but remove personal details like serial number/deviceID and home location.
    3. Avoid double posts and same-time-request in other forums as this is neither helping nor will it result in completing the discussion of your problem in all forums you posted it!

Things you should know and have:
Winrar is a must have these days, only trust other packers if are certain they support the current RAR format with all features.
Learn to be alert when downloading files! Often the links are protected or the hosters site contains ads - no link in the forum will require you download from Livid, Usenet or similar sites! If in doubt use Jdownloader and copy the link into the clipboard, JD takes over and will promt you for all passwords/captchas without the risk of clicking onto stuff you don't want.
Never request to upload to a different hoster because you have a premium account there, accept what is offered and how it is offered, the uploaders invest a lot of their time to do it, so respect the work.
Basic skills in Windows and how to handle files are a requirement for most operations, so you should get used to it if not already done so
A clean install onto an empty dedice/SD often solves all problems, so give it a try before you think you need help
