    Default POI Manager Excel

    Dear forum friends,

In the emptiness of the corona time, I tried to make a new useful tool for you.
This is my POI_Manager_Excel in Excel.
For the moment you can read and write TomTom OV2-files and universal CSV-files with it.
A read file can be changed (edited) and wrote back as a CSV- or OV2-file.
You can also create your own files with it by typing the POI-s in the sheet and write the to a CSV- or OV2-file.
This is the first version and I hope to expand it in later versions.
You are free to suggest new parts for it.

To understand TomTom OV2 file you got to know some things about them.
They are binary files with different sorts of records.
Record type 0, 2, or 3 are all build in the same structure:
    Record Byte(s) Contents
    0 Record Type (0, 2, or 3)
    1 through 4 Record Length
    5 through 8 Longitude
    9 through 12 Latitude
    13 through (Record Length - 1) Null-terminated string value(s)
These records has variable record lengths because of the string part which describes the POI.
Type 2 is a regular POI record, type 0 is a deleted POI record and type 3 is an Extended POI record.

And record type 1 has the following structure:
    Record Byte(s) Contents
    0 Record Type (1)
1 through 4 Block Length (bytes to skip)
5 through 8 Longitude of NE corner
9 through 12 Latitude of NE corner
13 through 16 Longitude of SW corner
17 through 20 Latitude of SW corner
These records are so called “Skippers” and are used by TomTom devices for index purposes.
If you make a (large) POI files without Skipper-records your device needs a lot of time to search in the file. With type 1 records it can jump (Skipping) faster through the file.
I have managed to integrate a little (free) program I found on the internet called OV2optimizer.
This program adds and corrects the Skipper-records to a set of POIs. It runs on the moment the POIs are saved, if you choose so. Otherwise the POIs are saved without Skipper records.
In the map you find a sub map OV2optimizer. Just leave it there and the program can use it.
You can also run the OV2optimizer by hand by starting OV2optimizer.exe. It will first ask you for the input .ov2 file and after processing ask you for the name of the output .ov2 file.

The rar-file needs to be unpacked with rar 5.x

There are 3 example OV2-file in it. 2 of camper places in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The third one are a few Hotels and camper-places in New Zealand from a personal journey in that fantastic part of the world , which I added because it is small (fast) and to prove myself that my tool also works correct with coordinates ”Down under”.

So have fun with this POI_Manager_Excel and please let me know what you think of it.

    Regards
    Peter
