Default Is there known problems with patching Tomtom Go 50?

I was thinking of buying a second hand Go 50, but I've read on a couple of forums people having issues with patching them, particularly that they freeze/won't work properly when the patch is installed on the latest navcore, and that the only way to get it to work was to put it into recovery mode and install an older navcore that isn't the easy to find, and that process sounded complicated in itself.

Obviously I would just like a device that is straightforward to install the patch on, and avoid ending up in a situation where I have to spend hours trying to diagnose the problem and being frustrated, and risk bricking the device.

I suppose no one can give any concrete guarantee that the patch will work for any particular device, it's a case of try it at your own risk sort of thing. Although the patching process for NAV4s does seem a lot more complicated and long-winded than for older Tomtoms, with more inherent risk of bricking I should think.

From what I can gather people have successfully patched Go 50s, but only after a lot of trial and error experimenting with different navcore and patch combinations until something works.

I've patched a few GO 40/50/60 devices (and also some 500/600). Had some problems with them, until I found the correct way to do it.
First, you need to insert an microSD card in the device and format it to use with maps (you need to do this first, as you won't be able to do it after removing the maps).
Then, remove the microSD card and connect the device to the computer.
Use MyDrive Connect and update the NavCore to the latest version. Update everything else (except maps).
Now you need to use MyDrive Connect to remove every map from the internal memory. If it let you remove them from the remove option, do so. If it warns you that you need at least a map in the internal memory, try to install a map larger than your internal memory, and it will show you the option to remove unused items. Use this to remove the map.
After this, disconnect the device from the computer. It should show you a message saying that there are no available maps.
Close MyDrive Connect (you need to close it from the taskbar too).
Now you just need to follow the tutorial to patch your NavCore (use the latest version available) and the install your maps and speedcams on the microSD.
It will work like a charm, no freezing whatsoever.

Thanks for the detailed reply. If I have to format the microSD card for use with maps first, does this mean that I'll need 2 microSD cards, another one to create the magic SD card to install the patch?

I have now bought a Go 50, but when I followed the steps you mentioned to uninstall the map from internal memory, it wouldn't let me do it, even when I tried to install a larger map. It said "must be at least one map on internal memory" and wouldn't let me proceed. So I'm a bit stuck really.
