I'm updating a TomTom Go 1005 for a friend. I'm not familiar with the line and don't see that model in any of the lists. Can someone advise me of which Canada/US map I should be loading?

If you have it as indicated above, connect with MyDrive connect accept all updates, when finished close MyDrive connect and do not use it again, then open TTAactivator use normal patch, then install the map of your area when finished restart your tomtom, when you return to turn on if invalid map appears accept redial the installed map and it will be fine.
