Joint map subscriptions, purchasing teams/sponsorship..NEW DISCUSSION THREAD
As the original thread ran to over 100 posts I think it's time we closed that and asked for continued, meaningful, constructive suggestions & proposals here.

The idea was that anyone could part-sponsor new map subscriptions (ideally using paypal) via carlmai or myself (although Euros to carlmai would be a better deal for most than Sterling to myself) or even buy the map(s) yourself and be reimbursed by carlmai (subject to available funds)
There are obviously fewer of us with still-supported NAV2 devices which will inevitably shrink further as more devices are killed off by TT or thrown away by disappointed owners.
Some of you are happy to go public on which maps you have subs for but I'm sure some of you would rather not let the world know and wish to keep this relatively private so I still suggest you pm carlmai and/or myself (or any other volunteers as collators/archivists of this info?) with details of exactly which NAV2 map(s) YOU have subs for, for what device & for how long so we don't duplicate things.
Furthermore, IF YOU ARE WILLING TO HELP then you can post your own specific request here including which device/map you're after (eg Mazda NB1 Australia 2018 etc). Please don't use this thread to ask for a specific map if you're not willing to sponsors us.
I know there are still a few NAV2 devices out there with "Lifetime maps" which, until TT decide their "life" is over, should be a good source of metas if owners are willing to spend their time downloading each/all/every available area/zone/region etc available to them & creating/sharing all the subsequent metas with us.
Without the continued financial (or other) support from you good people............you work out the answerbiggerdave Reviewed by biggerdave on . Count me in, as previously mentioned I will be happy to purchase UK & Ireland with 6 map updates. If we have no long term alternate source. If the joint purchase team wish to donate towards the cost then I would rather that be used by the team to purchase other maps.
I will also donate £10 to Western Europe or whole of Europe, if that is what needs to be done to give us support on these maps until Q3 of 2019.
Basically I will donate £40 to £50.
I will leave the purchase of the UK map for a few days to see if we can identify a source that has a current subscription.
oops I signed in with my laptop with a different login "sami090511"

I just received an email from Tomtom (related to my Go 750) , stating that there won't be map renewal possibility as of January 2018.
This email also points to the following Web adress :
Are you sure maps v1005 will be made available by tomtom as were the previous ones every quarter year ?

Yes, all the time the people have on-going subscriptions (even for end-of-life devices like yours) they WILL still continue to supply maps during the subscription period but those without subs won't be able to buy any more. However there are still quite a few NAV2 devices (mostly with larger that 2GB internal memories) where you can still buy new maps/services etc
@dillon2982 thanks for your offer to help out. As you may know, there are at least 3 different versions of most maps out there dependent on the device/navcore etc; see here for various features
However if you are still willing and able to donate then please pm carlmaiPlease do not just post "thanks" but use the "thanks" button bottom/right or the reputation star "*" bottom/leftS i m p l e s

No problem, I will PM carlmai.
I think we will find that the number of map versions will diminish there is no longer a reason to support software below 9.0xx and that greatly reduces the map versions required. That along with stopping all zone maps will have a major cost impact on maintaining their map portfolio. I think some of the change has been brought about by people trying to buy maps which would not fit on their devices and likely NAV2 devices with memory of 4gb or greater will be supported until new map sizes e.g. Europe exceed 4gb.
Similarly there may be less need for members to load individual country maps, I initially had the view that I would need, UK & IE and Western Europe, but on reflection I am coming to the view that the whole of Europe would likely be a far better option. So I am currently testing that concept. I also tended to use individual country maps in the belief that the gave greater detail, I think that was the case some years ago when they were trying to pack the maps into small device internal memories, definition was lost in the process. Similarly the US, Canada and Mexico map may well cover the needs of anyone needing individual country maps of either country. Now is the time to test these possibilities while we have the maps to hand.

I think you will find that all the roads are covered, however some of the maps do carry info which some units cannot hold without using an SD Card to have all the extras on it. Case in point, Some units bought in UK covers. Can alter that by adding an SD Card, covers all of europe and additional maps for other countries. TT are cunning buggers as we know.
The thing is the GO710 in local region, GO720 is Europe, the GO730 is world. A GO720 with a card is just as good as GO730 for the cost of a memory card. Hence the GO720 popularity. One day, someone might make things work perfectly before release. Sadly not in my or your lifetime. At least by finding problems and sorting them, we are still alive.

Yes, but you are missing the point. Small units can house small maps only, but by adding an SDCard, that can allow for larger maps. Not too difficult to add them to a unit as shown in discussions elsewhere. Then they where a lot more expensive, but now are cheap. Will not enhance the speed of old units. They will still be slow. Some are USB and not USB2, so still very slow. But adding a 4GB card, to those and where practical, 8GB or more. It used to be possible to get 8GB SDCards, but now 8GB is SDHC Bear in mind that the old units only supported SD and not SDHC until patched, hence the bootloader. By the way, if you intend soldering, use of telecom wires makes the job easy. One day, someone might make things work perfectly before release. Sadly not in my or your lifetime. At least by finding problems and sorting them, we are still alive.
