    Default Rediculous map sizes?

I just started updating a TomTom 6100 with the v10.50 Europe maps only only to find that the map comes in at over 9GB which is too big for the internal 8gig memory.
At over twice the size of the Europe_1050_10176 map I feel that TomTom is having a laugh. I know that memory card prices are as cheap as chips nowadays and that I could choose regions, but the fact is that the 6100 had the full Europe v950 map installed when it came into my possession.

On a lighter note it seems, according to mydrive connect, that lifetime map, traffic and speed camera updates expires in 2031.

Well I can't really complain as I only paid £35 for it as it wasn't holding a charge and needed a new battery. My comments were intended to point out how little manufacturers think of their customers
convenience, or in some cases, lack of fast broadband or providers download limits. Having said that I see that Garmin also have maps around the same size so it isn't just TomTom.
I think I have been spoiled in the past by downloading just the U.K at under 300mb and the U.S.A under 2gb for nav2 units from this great forum.

That is indeed not really expensive in my opinion.
All I can offer you is to install any map you want direct from my private server, if there is a meta code for it, NAV2 or NAV3

Thanks for your generous offer but it is not needed. The 6100 is a NAV4 unit and luckily I have truly unlimited downloads at around 4mbs, even so mydrive connect told me that updating would take around 80mins. Not sure what it did take as I went for a coffee and a chat with the wife. If there was a way of getting the map off or the meta I of course would but a NAV4 is a problem at the moment as we know.
Once again thanks for the offer.

If you are thinking of buying a new TOTF TomTom Unit, make sure it will handle 64GB to 128GB SDHC cards, but also USB3 connection. My GO5200 will take up to 128GB cards, and download all the maps, not 256GB. Also something to bear in mind is, will only swap maps using a 32GB Card. It holds all the world maps except China. It holds all but that does not include the small maps in they appear in the big maps, but does all those not included. 128GB covers all, but full, may not now. Did 2 versions ago. With Wifi, I currently download at 17.5MB/s if using Filefactory. If many files at a time, 5 downloads at (9MB/s, but more, are slower, so seems max is 45MB/s. After time starts to play Captca. Annoying, so change ip addess, relog into FF and then continue. I cannot be doing with capta stuff (no expletive Dave but you know what I mean)
This is for the maps of the older units, rather than currect ones downloaded via TT for free which make a long time to download

One day, someone might make things work perfectly before release. Sadly not in my or your lifetime. At least by finding problems and sorting them, we are still alive.

I don't think I would ever buy a new TomTom unit again as I am well retired and have got used to the TomTom app on my phone and that's far easier to carry around than the stand alone units. I will end up giving the 6100 to my brother to replace his ancient Garmin 212 as he still runs around the countryside. The 6100 will certainly handle 32GB cards but I don't have a larger one to try so can't comment. I don't mind buying old TomTom's to play with though.
Thanks for the interest and suggestions though.

That sir, is a very good point, as the mobile app is as good as any unit, and as good. the routes and stuff is same or better and better for contacts. My in car GM, Audi ones have clearer maps, but are useless for routes. Both Mobile and units far out pass the competition and Google. One downside is the postcodes. They do change with estates and developments. Google appears to be better at that than TomTom. We know a new build, has to have a postcode, before a mortgage will be allowed. It my mean an existing one is changed. OK for the postman, but not so good for these units. In a previous job, I used to get the postcodes files updated weekly as we were sending out millions of letters a day. Different job now, but my close friends here who what I do, so is still many millions a day but brown envelopes LOL.

I am fine with my unit and mobile and have no thought to get another. I have a spare of the same, so if a problem, I have backup. Mostly use if for avoiding jams, even though few miles, there are many jabs to and from work. So working from home, saves about 2.5 hours in traffic, no fuel costs or parking fees and at work, not loose chatting about footie, or what is on tv etc. My work is the same but same but easier without interruptions, but can take short breaks when need, rather than set times.
This virus is and will change a lot of people and companies, lifestyle, outlook on life, economy. It is not over, and not likely to ne soom really, and probably not for a long time really. One think, it has many many change their way of life

On my Galaxy note 4 and & Galaxy S8+ I have TomTom Go and NDS apps along with Sygic and Navitel apps and I prefer all of them over the built in TomTom maps in my Citroen. I think people should remember that there is no perfect solution and nothing can replace common sense. I bought a TomTom 910 around 2006 about £275 upgraded to a 530 then 950 and then moved to using the phone app but at the wrong side of 70 I have no need for the latest and greatest especially as most of the so called upgrades are actually a step backwards. I do like the lifetime map, traffic and speed camera updates though and the 6 inch screen on the 6100 is gorgeous but certainly isn't as responsive as a phone.
Best of all I still carry a map in the car just in case.
