I really regreat loosing TTUser, as we did a lot together when versions were 3 digits, 860 and a lot happened since then, and many over others have added ways to do things. Someone upset him big time and he left. It was a sad loss, as we used to code together many years go. A hugh loss to you guys, and a big loss of a friend.
I am lucky to have friends here from my problem in 2015 and been helped a lot.
Things have changed though, an to be honest, although working on ways to get access to old nav3 units, honestly, now I work really at Nav7 units. That is simply because I could not really be assed to spend my time working on old stuff that is so much better now, and the cost is low how. My hourly rate for income is over the cost of a new unit.

In real terms, get a new unit. And do get a TT unit or phone app, because they are better than others. Get the correct unit for your needs. It does not have to be highest in list...The low end are quite cheap now.
Think about it. you buy Iphones, or other better phones.. The app works fine on them, and it is cheap

If you think this is bad advice, post it on page, but only when you realize you are incorrect

One day, someone might make things work perfectly before release. Sadly not in my or your lifetime. At least by finding problems and sorting them, we are still alive.

I think just the other way around the GPS is assisted by phone towers but when there are no phone towers or less it
    works like a normal GPS.

Assisted GPS, usually abbreviated as A-GPS (or AGPS), is a technique in which positioning is supported (assisted) by a GPS receiver by receiving information from external sources other than the GPS satellites.

During start-up, a GPS receiver determines its initial position using information received from the GPS satellites about orbits and the position of the satellites (the so-called GPS almanac). To receive this information correctly, the satellite signal received must be relatively strong. When the GPS receiver is surrounded by tall buildings or indoors, it can be difficult for the receiver to quickly determine its location.

For GPS receivers equipped with Assisted GPS, the receiver uses additional information. In the event that a GPS receiver is built into a mobile phone, the connection to the mobile exchange is used. For example, the mobile phone company may send a raw position determination derived from measurements of the strength of the mobile phone signal when it is received by different cell towers near the mobile phone. Information about the position of the satellites can also be provided, so that the GPS receiver no longer depends on receiving this information from the satellites themselves. It is also possible to have computers in the exchange make more complex position calculations that the small processor in the phone cannot handle.

In addition to mobile phone masts, Wi-Fi networks can also be used to determine the location of the device.

In this way, the rough location can be quickly displayed before GPS can determine the exact location using the received information and the satellite signals.

A-GPS via a smartphone is only possible if the internet, so the use of mobile data, is switched on. Without an internet connection, A-GPS works like a normal GPS.
