    START 25 - Sudden Death?

Default START 25 - Sudden Death?

    Hey everyone,

More drama with my START 25.

I plugged it in today to update to the 1040 maps via MDC - this device has 'lifetime' updates. Sure enough, once connected - it showed three updates, the NZ map, the AU map and I think the quick GPS. Now before I could select and start the update, the update automatically started, then failed midway (starting the device had disconnected) and the START 25 went blank.

That's it. It has been blank since. No matter how long I hold the power button, no drumroll.

Just an extra bit of info -immediately before plugging in the START 25, I was updating a START 60 which was acting up somewhat. So I am suspecting that a cache stored update for that device was forced onto this one? Sounds wrong but who knows.

What I do know is that the START 25 won't start anymore.

Ideas, guys? This is a trusty device in our second car and I do want to bring it back to life.

I think you'll get more help from their own forum for these newer devices;-

Thanks, Dave. Will try that as well.

No ideas, anyone? Do you think once the battery discharges completely I may have some luck? What can cause the device to die all of a sudden?

Is there a way for me to reflash the ROM or something? Clearly this has to do with the device automatically disconnecting when it was being updated by MDC.

    Help?

    Thanks,

If/as/when you get any news (most probably from the TT forum rather than here) it goes without saying that any tricks or tweaks you learn can be shared here (for the few here that use these later non-crackable devices)

    Will absolutely do that, Dave.

One update, though - I did take the Start 25 apart and disconnected the battery and let is rest for a few minutes - hoping this would discharge the capacitors and somewhat reset the device. No joy. Still dead as a dodo. MDC shows three pending updates, but the damned device will not power up and hence is not recognised by the computer.

Not sure what could be wrong. I do not suspect it is the battery or the screen as both were working just fine before the device went dead.

Will share more when I hear from the TT forum.

    Cheers!

You could search the motherboard for a fuse.
Please note that it will not look like an old fuse and will be soldered to the motherboard as an SMD part.
Measuring is knowing, guessing is missing, if possible measure where the voltage is connected to the motherboard.
There must be an electronic switch behind it, put the negative test pin on the minus connection and test with the positive test pin if there is voltage elsewhere on the motherboard.
Measure briefly at the connection before and after the components. it is possible that you will encounter a defective fuse in this way.
If you find voltage far away from the power connection, then it will certainly not be a fuse but a different component, for example a voltage regulator.

Has the plus and minus been connected incorrectly once?
The device should be able to withstand this if a diode is mounted over the power connection, because the fuse in the cord will die.
If that diode is not there, which I find unlikely, then you have a much bigger problem.

    Good luck in any case

    Thanks, Aad.

That is very good advice. I will trace the PCB today or tomorrow and post the results :-)

However - I am still wondering - how and why a simple update do this to the device?

    Thanks again,

It is exactly the same as when I throw a ball against the wall here and the lights go out at the neighbors.
    Coincidence maybe?

No, that's called a hand grenade; not a ball!

When you launch an update, MDC downloads the maps, ephemerides files, the navcore imposed on you if it needs to be updated, in a cache folder that you find here:

    C: \ Users \ your name \ AppData \ Local \ TomTom \ HOME3 \ cache

You also find a file named "cache-status.xml" in which all information about update operations is logged.

As you were already connected to MDC with the Start 60 and you connected with the Start 25, it can, as you said, that MDC mistreated the Start 25, but also the entries in the file "cache-status .xml ".

An idea, save the cache folder and delete its contents, including the file "cache-status.xml", restart MDC by connecting your Start 25, perhaps with luck ...
