GO 520 worth an upgrade from a GO 510?

Default GO 520 worth an upgrade from a GO 510?

    Hello everyone,

GO 520 worth an upgrade from a GO 510?

Just wanted to know your thoughts on this one. I am a happy user of the GO 510. It has world maps, live traffic and live speedcams etc. What it does not have is wifi updates and Bluetooth handsfree.

So is this reason enough to upgrade? Are there any additional features in the GO 520 that the 510 doesn't have? I may be able to get a sweet deal on a lightly used GO 520 unit. But I am wondering if I would simply be wasting $150 on a non-upgrade.

I was looking at the 5200/6200 units but they run on 2G which is on its way out here in NZ.

    Cheers!

Check with the first 2 characters of the serial number whether it is still supported by TomTom because lifetime is determined by TomTom and is not related to how long the hardware continues to work.
You can forget to put maps on it yourself and you also need to be sure that you will get an existing working subscription.

Why not looking for a device in the GO x50 serie.
They are much “newer” then the GO x20 serie and les change that the are EOL (end of life). The GO 950 is a good device and can be updated yourself. And you can better have a 7xx or a 9xx version of a serie, because they have mostly more internal memory and a SD-card slot.

By the way, the GO 520 is Some what less complicated in use as a GO 510.

Thanks, Aad. Both the GO 510 and 520 are current devices here in NZ and are well supported. They are retailing new in stores and should be supported by TomTom for a few years at the very least. My GO 510 has lifetime map updates and as a NAV4 device, sure enough, it gets all the new updates. What are your throughts?

Thanks, Peter. I did have a GO 950 that I recently gave away. Unfortunately it was the non-live version and did not come with traffic, speedcamps or map updates. I do want a NAV4 device as I think they will be supported for a few years at least. Is there a GO 550 or 650 or a NAV4 x50 device?

Also - how is the GO 520 less complicated than the 510? Thoughts?

    Thanks so much! :-)

If you need it so much, buy a Go 520/5200/620/6200. If not - why then the question?

That is one of the even newer NAV5 devices which are not "crackable" and apparently these WiFi devices can literally take HOURS to update/add new maps too!

PS, if it ain't broke, don't fix it as the older x10's are pretty reliable

Wise words, Dave. That is what I am tending towardsas well - just that I had this 'upgrade' itch but can't seem to be able to find a worthy upgrade. The sweet deal on the GO 520 got me thinking on these lines. Haha. I will read through that forum link you sent.

So I am concluding the GO 520 is not much of an upgrade, then, afterall?

    Cheers!

New doesn't always mean better/improved, just that TT are pi55ed off with people like us and are trying to stop us pirating their stuff by moving the goalposts.
PS the far better pocketgps speedcams, differently sourced POIs etc cannot be used on the new models and as we know "lifetime" means "till we couldn't be a4sed to continue supporting you"!

We all get this upgrade itch sometimes, with me it was recently to change my browser from my good/trusty/fast Slimjet Chrome to something "different" but after wasting a few days, I'm still using it!
How about upgrading your TV or laptop or car or phone instead?
