I've been looking a bit around concerning the GL1. I'm pretty convinced now that these units won't receive an official update from TomTom. The GL1/Hammerhead chip was launched sometime around 2004. The most prominent device using this chip is probably the opensource linux-based OpenMoko Neo1973 smartphone. Due to their stance towards promoting opensource and openhardware, they were not happy that the A-GPS chip came with a closed-source binary blob "gllin". There were quite some efforts reverse engineering the binary and to create an opensource interface, however unsuccessful, and with the release of the newer OpenMoko Neo FreeRunner, which uses a different GPS chip, there wasn't much interest in pursuing further reverse engineering.

This binary-to-NMEA-converter "gllin" is probably what is "gltt" on our TomToms. Now it seems this is not so closed-source, but possibly handed to TomTom under an NDA. I believe this because TomTom was able to make adjustments, e.g. they hard-coded the file name of the output fifo to be "/var/run/gpspipe", while it is different in "gllin". Anyway, it's a closed-source blob and probably even if TomTom wanted, they can't release the source, as was requested by someone on their forum.

This brings me to the conclusion as to why TomTom won't fix GL1 devices: GL2 "Barracuda" is - as the name unambiguously suggests - the successor (launched in 2007/2008 still by Global Locate) to GL1 "Hammerhead" (note how they seemed to like fish ). I guess both blobs "glgps" and "gltt" aren't too different. If TT was able to fix the bug in "glgps", it shouldn't be much more difficult to fix "gltt". Or maybe they don't have access to the source anymore (contractual agreement)? In that case, I don't see why Broadcom would submit a patch for "glgps" but hold back on "gltt", if it was available. So, unless Broadcom decides to publish the source for the translator, I don't think we can expect an official update for GL1 devices!

For those who can not afford a toothpick or a paperclip, but would like to use "suicide.dat" only when needed, so that they do not have to wait for ±3 minutes each time they turn on their GPS, our friend speedy29 of the Italian forum GbcNet has created an option to enable or disable suicide.dat.

You can download it below. Just unpack the "PowerOn_Off_Menu.zip" archive and copy the two "suicide" and "sdkregistry" folders to the root of the internal memory or SD card. If the folder "sdkregistry" already exists, copy there the contents of the folder "sdkregistry" of the archive.

The original version being of course in Italian, I translated it. "cambia in SPEGNIMENTO" and "cambia in STAND-BY" became "Enable SUICIDE" and "Disable SUICIDE". I changed the number of seconds contained in the "suicide.dat" file from 20 to 10, but each can adapt it to his preferences. By default, I disabled "suicide.dat".

I have a Rider2 (SIRF 3) in the summer village that I thought I would use during the holidays next month. What should I do with it?

Just use it. It should be fine. Maybe you need a suicide.dat. But from what I've heard from Rider-2-users so far there is no problem, contrary to other SiRF3 units.

Thanks treysis for what you have brought us with this patch. As for Tomtom official answer, their official reply is to upgrade to newer Tomtom after they have identified which Tomtom model you have.
I don't see why they would release a patch for models they don't follow.

They had to release a fix for GL2 as I guess some models are still supported such as the 950 for example (which basically is almost identical to the 750 which is not supported anymore).
But once more and more models are not supported, we would have less and less patchs available from Tomtom.
Better to archive opensource files right now available from Tomtom before it gets too late.
I would dream to customize and add functions to my Tomtom and really make it open source, such as adding internet connection by bluetooth for instance.

Hi all. I have a tomtom one v8 with the GL1 antenna, with 32 RAM, with the navcore 9541 and the map 1030.9524. From April 6 I have the problem of the hour that stays at 00:00 and problems with the reception of the satellites.

Given this, my question is that if with the ttconv-v9, the problem of the time and reception of the satellites would be solved?

Another thing how to install and where the ttconv-v9 file is installed?

    where is the patch ttconv-v9?

    I hope your answer

    Warm regards to all

@rafita-jerez use ttconv-v11. It's on rima-lock.com. just extract to ur TomTom. This will fix the time issue. There should be no reception problem with GL1.

If the fix is not working for you, you can delete the ttn File.
Than the Tomtom Rider will start without the fix... of course with broken time.

this fix also works with some other Tomtom´s ONE 3rd, ONE XL, XL 2008 with GL1 chipset...
