Default TomTom XL very slow to copy in it

    Hi,
It's been 2 hours that I try to copy a map (400 MB) to my TomTom XL and it's not over yet. It has copied copied 190 MB.
Do you have an idea how can I activate this copy?
Is there a reset on this device?

There is a pinhole reset in the bottom of the unit for a "soft reset" but then try a "hard reset" by holding down the power button until you hear the drum roll or try running clearflash 3 times from here & try again

This is quite normal, most of the XL are very slow, but hours no.
When I update the XL from our neighbours, Central Europe will take at least nearly an hour.
Maybe another Bootloader, which manage and control the hardware, could be a solution ?

The transfer rate of a XL should always match the USB1 speed. A wrong bootloader can be a cause for this.
If you name the first two characters of the serial number, you can get a hint for a suitable bootloader.

Which XL unit have you got, as there are several? XL IQ, ONE XL, XL 30, XL LIVE IQ, but all are pretty slow at downloading. Even those units with SD Cards are slow for downloading. I remember Europe taking 52 mins that turned out to be a little over an hour.

With newer units with MicroSD, they are using USB 2 which is a lot faster but still quite slow. The new units are much faster. UK via Wifi at 72Mbps for about 855MB, faster by USB. Just timing UK using USB took 3:21 mins. Wifi took 8:13 mins in car's wifi hotspot and 5 mins from my router. In both cases was to the unit and not the external card which would presumably take a bit longer. The lead I used on my unit was USB3 but used USB2 and no difference

USB 1.x 1.5 Mbit/s (Low Bandwidth or Low Speed) and 12 Mbit/s (Full Speed)
USB 2.0 Due to bus access constraints, the effective throughput of the High-Speed signalling rate is limited to 280 Mbit/s or 35 MB/s
    USB 3.0 with constraints is
3.2 Gbit/s or 400 MB/s though can be higher when not limited to units attached to it

So you should see why your unit with USB 1 is slow

It is damned annoying. I remember those days well. Updating maybe 3 or 4 units. Going back to GO510, 520 times
And inserting SDCards into units without slots. Hayho, glad not doing it now or even replacing batteries on old units. Use to be worthwhile, but not now with the costs so low and units available on eBay so cheap (not Amazon as expensive)
One day, someone might make things work perfectly before release. Sadly not in my or your lifetime. At least by finding problems and sorting them, we are still alive.

Not only . The x20/30 with SD/SDHC also supporting USB2. But even for these devices is the best way a fast card reader to copy a big map to the SDHC. So i use it for my Go920.
My ONE-3rd with soldered intern 4 GB microSD has a transferrate of ca. 500 kB/s. So a 2GB map needs just over one hour, but not more. Time for some coffees or cigarettes...

@Alfred_ML If it's allowed to ask, why didn't you use an adapter ?
It seems to me much faster when you put the micro sdhc in the cardreader ?

This user has copied the exact same messages across at least 3 x forums but doesn't tell anybody any information about his device...

Yesterday I told him that I suspect the bootloader needs updating but nobody can advise him of that if they don't know what is currently?

Since then, I haven't seen any further replies so it's probably been answered on yet another forum...so don't waste any more time on him lads

That no misunderstandings arise here: Sometimes i use a cardreader to copy big maps to SD/SDHC or microSD of my Go920.
The microSD of my ONE-3rd is plugged to an intern soldered microSD-SD-Adapter. I have used this combination "micoSD-to SD-Adapter", because the soldering surfaces of the Adapter are bigger than microSD and no danger of overheating of the memory during soldering. But I can't remove the microSD from the ONE-3rd without opening the device. I didn't want to change anything on the device cover. So I have to drink a coffee when copy a big map

Many thanks for your answer Alfred, I did more or less the same with my GO 910, but soldering wasn't necessary, just only a gap in the body was needed.
I know it's not possible with every One, I've an old One too, with PB as the first two characters, TomTom tell me TomTom ONE 125 with just only 1GB
As far as I know, nobody succeeded yet to modify this model ?
