Aye aye captain! Now looking!
Yes, a new digitiser can fix the scratches on the screen, but not the scratches on the device. I would look for a better one. No scratches, no repair-stress.
By the way: Only the Go 920/930/940/950 have the EPT feature (tunnel-navigation without satellite signal). Nice if different exits in a tunnel.
These models can also use the free RDS/TMC receiver in the active dock...if you can find one at a reasonable cost (and they work great too)

Thank you guys for your constant assistance :-) I went ahead and did the unthinkable! Picked up the Start 20 for India and the 950 for NZ :-) total cost - 54 bucks. Plus possible ten bucks more if I think the 950 needs a new digitiser. I will keep you guys posted on this thread on my experiments with the MANY TomToms I will now have with me soon! Thanks again :-)
Just as a thread update - I did finally get my hands on the rather troubled Go 950. With the help of our lovely, helpful, brilliant 'rusigor', I was able to get the screen working somewhat and I now have a usable, fully functional Go 950. And this one, ladies and gents, does have audible speed warnings! So well, that sort of sums up this thread :-)
I can confirm what fredderf said - there is no way on earth that you can make the XL 335 get the audible warnings no matter what you do! Ha!
Cheers guys, you all are lovely!
