Amsterdam, 18 December 2015 – TomTom (TOM2) continues to innovate with completing the move to its new transactional-based mapmaking platform. This platform is the first of its kind in the map industry and a leap forward in mapmaking technologies. It furthers TomTom’s lead in delivering the highest quality and up-to-date maps optimizing on crowdsourced data alongside traditional mapmaking methods. This launch represents a significant milestone for the company and is the critical step to bringing real-time maps to customers.

“We are the first to deliver a global platform that allows for map updates to be continuously released to users,” said Harold Goddijn, CEO at TomTom. “The era of map updates in batches is over, now we can update maps as changes are detected. This puts TomTom in a unique position to start providing the real-time quality and accuracy needed for the future use-cases such as driver assistance applications and highly automated driving.”

TomTom’s new transactional mapmaking platform brings great advantages in efficiencies and minimises the time between detecting changes in the real-world and updating the map on an end-user’s device. A change can pass through TomTom’s mapmaking process, be fully quality assured in real-time, and end up in a customer’s map in just minutes. This new platform can scale to process new sources of sensor data efficiently, furthering TomTom’s lead in optimising professional and community input mapmaking techniques. End-users using TomTom’s real-time maps will always have accurate and up-to-date maps across automotive, mobile and location-based online applications.

“This has been a huge, complex project for the maps team at TomTom and I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved and the time in which it has been achieved,” said Charles Cautley, Managing Director Maps & Licensing at TomTom. “There is a lot of potential with this new platform and with it we look forward to delivering the high-quality map content that meets the growing customer location requirements.”

TomTom expands its global Traffic footprint to 64 countries

ITS Europe Congress, Strasbourg, June 20, 2017 – TomTom (TOM2) today announced the introduction of TomTom Traffic in Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, Croatia and Romania as well as in Oman, Qatar, Bahrein and Israel, extending the service’s reach to 64 countries. With these new countries added, TomTom now offers the most comprehensive traffic coverage of Europe as well as of the Middle-East, including Israel.
TomTom Traffic offers up-to-date information on road conditions such as traffic jams, roadworks and accidents. This information can be used by drivers to find the most optimal route and avoid congestion, but also by cities and road authorities to monitor, analyse and influence the traffic. “The further geo-expansion of TomTom Traffic into Eastern Europe and the Middle East will be a huge help to*drivers, businesses and government in better managing traffic flow, increasing road safety and easing the impact of congestion on the environment”, said Andreas Erwig, VP Business Development and Business Operations at TomTom.
With rapid developments in Autonomous Driving and an increased focus on Smarter Cities and Transportation, accurate and fresh traffic information is playing an increasingly important role. As a result, TomTom is working on making its traffic technology available in a greater number of countries, supported by the continuous growth in the supply of source data it receives from over 500 million devices*.
TomTom plans to further accelerate its Traffic geo-expansion plans with several additional countries expected to be launched in 2017. This rapid growth demonstrates the scalability of the TomTom Traffic technology, as well as the ability of TomTom to support its clients globally with high quality maps and traffic services.

TomTom and Toyota to Offer Drivers a Navigation App that Mirrors to In-Dash Screens

TU-Automotive, Detroit, MI, USA, June 5, 2018 Today, TomTom (

vehicles’ in-dash screens using SmartDeviceLink (SDL) technology – a first for both TomTom and Toyota. The TomTom Navigation App is available at no extra cost to Toyota drivers in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay – on both iOS and Android™ phones.
The app provides an online navigation experience by combining offline maps with online services such as

, Online Search and Online Routing*, with a fall back to offline turn-by-turn navigation in case connectivity is not available or not preferred. It uses the industry standard Navigation Data Standard (NDS) map format, making TomTom the first to launch an NDS-based smartphone application. Users benefit from NDS as it lets drivers download only the map cuts that they really need – with weekly incremental map updates instead of big quarterly updates. Another novelty is the completely revamped map visualization. The vector-based technology enables smooth visualization and responsive interaction with the digital map. One of the key new features is Moving Lane Guidance, an innovative way of showing the driver which lane(s) to take around highway junctions, which is an important enabler for lane-level navigation.
When connecting the smartphone to the car, the driver can see the TomTom Navigation App, and interact with it directly on the car’s screen – allowing for safer driving. This is enabled by SDL – an app mirroring technology that uses a standard set of protocols and messages that connect applications on a smartphone to a vehicle head unit. It is open source and is backed

made up of large automakers and suppliers including TomTom.
Antoine Saucier, Managing Director, TomTom Automotive, said: “Drivers worry about how much data they might be using when navigating with a smartphone app. That’s why we created the TomTom Navigation App – which works with offline maps, but still provides real-time services to users. We’re excited that Toyota drivers across Latin America can drive with it, and we’re sure that they’ll love being able to mirror the app to their in-dash screens.”
Miguel Fonseca, EVP, Toyota do Brasil Ltda., said: “We are delighted to work with TomTom as our navigation partner for the Latin American market as we recognize the benefits of offline map data and the need for accurate real-time traffic information for our car owners”

    TT and Real-Time Maps
I use TT GoMobile and it has been running in my car since last Sept on the 8" screen. I use WiFi Hotspot and works fine, but I use GO5200 more as I prefer other android things to be running. Oddly traffic seemed to be working fine in Bucharesti in 2016. But there was a street name that was incorrect, reported on numberous times over last few years. I wonder if they will have sorted that out this time (I am not holding my breath)
One day, someone might make things work perfectly before release. Sadly not in my or your lifetime. At least by finding problems and sorting them, we are still alive.
