Default TomTom GO 720 unable to use Navcore 9.520 & 910 maps

    1. I've recently acquired a TomTom GO720 from ebay.
    2. It came with a Navcore 8.351 with 2 maps, which are Guam (version 705.1481) and North America 2GB (705.1481)
    3. Backup was made to the attached Navcore and maps,
    4. The internal drive was formatted and cleared flashed.
    5. New Navcore 9.520 was copied to a SD
    6. The original 705 version Guam and North America maps together with Maps (version 910) were also copied to the same SD
    7. Fastactivate.exe with the latest meta.txt was run to patch the Navcore and maps. No errors were given.

    8. Turning on the GO720 with SD card revealed that only the original Guam and NA 2GB maps were usable. Not a single of the v910 maps were allowed to run.
    9. I tried to delete the ttgo.bif and let GO720 to generate another ttgo.bif. Steps 7 to 8 were repeated. Guam and NA remained to work while others weren't. So I ruled out the possibility that ttgo.bif is errorneous.
    9. It is much appreciated if I can have your enlightenment please.

    6. What 910 maps did you add (remember they MUST actually have metas available)

Do you see dct's in your new 910 map folders?

PS please don't start new sub-forums

    6. I used 910 maps that have available meta.

Apparently the problem is solved. It is something related to the Navcore 8.315 used. It is not compatible to some of the maps. I tried Navcore SE 9.510 and the GO720 is now working for the corresponding 910 maps.

Thank you for the kind attention and help.

My apologies if I had started sub-forum. Grateful if you could remove this to the appropriate location please. Thank you.

9.510 is the correct/official/current version anyway so you could (should have) just let TTHome incrementally update your card/device to that.
    Still, you're there now.

There is one point to note, and I may have misunderstood anyway. If the 720 unit and the SDCard both had identical navcores, did you individually crack both of them? Where it exists, the navcore on a SDCard takes priority over that of the 720. That could and most probably caused the initial problems, in that on boot up, it was seeing an unpatched navcore, even though you had patched the navcore on the 720. This is actually a very good feature of TomTom units, in that, should the ROM get irrepairably damaged, you can still have a functioning unit.
Anyway, glad you got sorted. With a 720, I really would agree with Dave, and use a standard version on the 9.51 navcore as there is nothing to be gained by the use of a SE version on a 720.

Maverick, may I ask you a question ?
Are you realy sure that when there is a malfuntion in the ROM you still have a working device ?
For me there is no ROM, but an E-Eprom as I may expect.
That brings me to another question, when it's an E-Eprom why is it so difficult to downgrade the bootloader ?

I'm eager to know your answers.

    Cheers,

    Aad - pe1agp

    is not difficult
the device only loads a bootloader with same or higher version-number , lower version-numbers are ignored

That is not the main question.
I doubt it highly that when there is a malfunction in either ROM. EPROM or E-EPROM your device will start.
I understand that lower bootloaders will be ingnored
Would it be an E-EPROM than it must be possible to erase the (E)lectrical (E)resable (P)rogrammable (R)ead (O)nly (M)emory
I'm not quite sure if it is an EPROM, because there is somewhere a routine how to downgrade your bootloader, but even as tricky or more than opgrade.
But once updated, there's no reason to upgrade that endless

Apologies for the long time in answering - I actually had some other factors going on at the time you ask which took precidence - no brakes on car and almost 1900 miles to drive. After sorting, I missed the thread so apologies. What I actually meant and did not make clear was that sometimes the contents can get irrevocably corrupted, and some units - notably some Ones and Go, can use the contents of the SDCard and not have problems. What I did not mean was if the unit lot the contents of the entire EPROM, it could be used, because it couldn't.

I have not tried replacing an EPROM in a unit, since never had cause. There has to be a point in life of any unit that it is not practical to repair. Indeed, I no longer put internal SD Cards in One v3 or things of that nature. There has to be a point when the decision to upgrade to a new unit outways the cost/time hassle of making do and fixing. It also has to be said that someone that really needs enhanced technology should dip into their pockets.

Whilst I have a 950 live, my colleague a 720 I sold him and other colleagues that have 550, 750 units etc, we can sort, but mostly technology is going towards smartphones and new units being sold with unlimited map updates and live traffic - so what is the point?

What we do and always have, as far as I am concerned is make a pretty good device, just that bit better.

As regards route planning, I still have full confidence with tomtom. ok the maps are not as good as they could be, but live traffic, iqrouting and routing in general surpasses anything else I have seen. I'm not overly bothered about some of the new advancements in graphic displays. What I want to do is go from one location to perhaps 6 others in the shortest time and not get held up by traffic. I can do that with TomTom, an thus, until some other provider does a better job, I will stick with them.....

I never thought i'd stop using Nokia, but windows...... give me Samsung or HTC. Not touching microsoft or apple if i can avoid it

Rant over - enjoy TT getting better
