Analyzing the XML there first of all there is a section "mounts"
<mount id="0" total="1934864384" avail="1174343680"/> <-- the xml id of the
<mount id="7efbf8d-26b6-4f8e-8bfb-19ce3a4191a" total="126270464" avail="107831296" cid="3314745354313A3820E0343F080086EB"/>
The first mount is the internal memory, the id (0), total space and available space.
The other mount is the little external memory i inserted in the microSD slot for testing the slot.
The second section is a list of package installed and where they are mounted:
<package id="de53cf87-25ee-4ccc-bb2f-13207994840b" mount="0"/>
<package id="007f4e63-1cfe-406f-8b48-5b6be420243f" mount="0"/>

.. <!-- lots of other packages here... -->
between them there is also the id of the map we will find in the setting section.
... to be continued...

... continue ...
The third section contains 3 certificates, everyone with an id e a data, the data probably in base64, first and second certificate has the same data content.
The third certificate in my XML has the same id of the only map installed on the device.
In the fourth section "settings", every setting has a key and a value:
Between other settings like "device_serial" there is the key "map_current" . It's value is the same of a package id and one of the certificate id.

Another brick in the wall:
Tried the script described in the chapter "Firmware" on the page hxxp://opentom.org/TomTom_Start_20 on the package Greece.ttpkg (Greece map) instead of the Navcore.
The procedure works fine and the map is uncompressed in a folder whose name is the identifier of the map, something like 2d0373e6-3fee-48ed-8545-97ff935b8fab. The folder contains the usually files we know (names.dat, ...). Out from the folder two more files. I'll post a screenshot this evening.

how about the 3 extra files , that come besides the map-folder
anyone know what they are ?
seems to me they must be related to the mysterious activating process

ok, let's consider again the Greece map:
The three external files are:
1) "files": contains
that is the ttpkg content except "files" and "files.sig"
It seems that every file with the path has an identifier.
this file is in the format <map id>_<map version>_arm.ipk
this is recognized under linux as a Debian archve.
Uncompressing we can find:
This is the structure of the map files (0 in dimension) plus a control file "control" whose content is:
3) "file.sig" is a binary file, 256 bytes in length.
