    Default Dnx995s

I've been using Kenwood units for years, thanks to the unlocked garmin maps. However, I got this unit, and it came installed with 2018.0 maps. I did what i'm used to doing, putting an unlocked image file on the SD card, but it didn't work this time. Searching shows that newer kenwood units block this method.

I saw in another thread, using gamin express to send the same map files to the SDcard, then replace the map img. I tried that, and when I insert the SD card it just tells me "loading map" but when I check on the unit, it still tells me it's using the 2018.0 map. I'm not sure if it's actually using the newer one and just displaying the old version or not.

    Any other suggestions?

I don't have a DNX unit anymore so my knowledge is a bit limited but from what I understand the newer DNX units use the Kenwoods device ID for map update. The way it works is you put a microSD card in the Kenwood and go to Settings > Device > Update Map and the Kenwood will then write your devices information to that SD card. You then take the SD card to your computer and run Garmin express which will download the map and write information to it specific to your Kenwood unit.

I'm not 100% sure how you get around this verification check on the newer Kenwoods but I would think it would be similar to the methods used on other Garmin devices. You could first try unlocking the map with

as that is supposed to decrypt the TRE sections since the encryption key is stored in the map. If using a gimgunlockked map doesn't work you could try

. Load the map in the program, input your device id and see if you can get it to work. There may be a setting or two you need to change to get the map to work. If neither of those work, you may be out of luck.

I just did my DNX994S. Used the method for the DNX9990 listed else where. Worked like a charm!

Ironically, nothing infuriates me more than what I did. My apologies. Actually I found the answer on a competitor site that I probably shouldn't like. Here is the text. From the copied text you should be able to find the site.

update works on a DNX5190 with 2019.10 NT NA. no special .unl or .gma

Just successfully loaded into internal memory a 2019.10 north america unlocked map on a DNX5190 that had previously a 2012 map with no options from Kenwood/Garmin for a new map.

First I updated the kenwood DNX5190 with the latest available firmware from kenwood site.

I did not have any sample .unl or .gma files so just made 2 dummy files using MSword and renamed them gmapsupp.unl and gmapsupp.gma

I used a blank thumb drive and let the DNX5190 write the Garmindevice.xml info file to it. To that garmin directory I added an unlocked gmapsupp.img of 2019.10 NT North America (2.802 Gb in size), and made two dummy files using MSword called gmapsup.unl and gmapsup.gma. Once those four files are in the garmin directory, the head unit happily loaded the map from the thumb drive when I selected update on the Kenwood. After completion, i reset the head unit and it now the map info shows it has the new 2019.10 map loaded.

The DNX5190 does not have a SD card slot or rear mini USB. It only has the single USB port on a cable. I was surprised it accepted the dummy .unl and .gma files. I thought they might "brick" it. After loading the new map, the unit has just 296.5mb free space according to the garmindevice.xml file where prior to the 2019 map update it had 1.479 Gb free space.

This site was a huge help in getting this to work and I joined just to post my success and help out by adding one more model to the list of units Kenwood says can't be upgraded, but obviously can if you know how.
