Default INSIGNIA NS-NAV01 is now running Win CE IGO 8.3.2

    Hi Folks.

This is how I converted my 2009 INSIGNIA NS-NAV01 (really a NS-NAV01C for Canadian)
    to run IGO 8.3.2

Thought I would post how I did it because there were a ton of these cheapo INSIGNIA
units sold and of course -- NO UPDATES -- -- NO REPLACEMENT CARD/ CARD IMAGES ---

First off, I copied the SD card to A NEW, BIGGER SD card, in this case a 16gb FAT32 card
Then I renamed the [WLNANavi480_272] folder to [OLD_WLNANavi480_272], just because... (omit brackets)

-- I want the old folders around so I could copy file names when I do so file name changing. --

I also OLD_ prefix renamed any other folders off the root, just because. I have the space on the card. Delete them later? Right now I am being cautious.

What I was able to grasp from hunting a lot of old forums and blogs is that the Insignia
is running WIN CE. The WIN CE is on the unit, GPS program and maps are on the SD card.

I should even be able to run MIO POCKET on it (and Mio Pocket is archived on Archive dot org -- you might even be able to DL it w/o a virus warning)

But I just want a newer set of maps for the GPS
So running IGO 8.3 alone plus NEW MAPS, is fine.

Here is where the instructions might get a bit useless for you, the reader:
I already had an ancient IGO 8.3 unit -- you will have to hunt up an SD card image somewhere.
    Maybe on this forum?

Specs the other old unit I had (which you really do not need)
    ---------------------------------------------
    OEM info YFAtlas4
    Rom version: 82F.YFBARI.1720.1FM2584A
    Software version: V3.6.E018.12.3
    Platform ID: 5955414E46454E47
    Device ID:lotsa zeros

Running Nav N Go iGo 8
    8.3.2.80621
    Mar 10 2009
    Basemap 2007.07 [080812]
    Canada 2008.10 [081210]
    ---------------------------------------------------

Perhaps these will help you find the IGO 8.3 files you need
You just need an SD card image from something similar that was running IGO 8.3

My old IGO8.3 unit had TWO versions of IGO on its SD card; iGO8-Canada and iGO8-USA . I copied the iGO8-Canada folder, w. subfolders over to my new card
Then I copied the other folders that looked useful:
    /backup
    /gpslog
    /tracks
and a file called device.nng (which may or may not be important)
    to the SD card root.

I'm guessing you can make these directories and leave them empty.
Maybe it will make its own device.nng on first start? Who knows
Have not played around enough and those ancient forum / blog advice
    posts mentioned nothing about it.

I rename the main program directory, [IGO8-Canada] to [WLNANavi480_272]
    (without the brackets)

Inside the folder, I rename iGO8.exe to WLNA_Navi.exe

Note the subfolders, especially the /content subfolder and its subfolders.

If you are working off an image of some other IGO8 SD card, you could pop the card back into the insignia now and see if it fires up. Mine did fine. Found the GPS at COM 7, set the baud automatically at 4800. (once I got a sat lock, outside on the back porch)

This leaves you with a machine running OLD MAPS tho...

Search this site for some new IGO 8.3 maps, I used "Canada_HERE_2020.Q4" by Nyky,

Put the whole mess of new maps in the /content/map folder, renamed old files to OLD_ prefixes, renamed new files to follow name convention of old files, (in this case Canada.xxx) copied the new .poi file over to the /poi folder after renaming the old one, just in case it looks for the poi files in that folder rather than the /map folder.

Handy guide to IGO 8.3 folder structure here (but 2009 units don't have all of these)
"structure for Primo folders and their content" graphic here:
    (/igo-general-discussions/252366-igo-setup-help.html?highlight=where+igo+files+go by kwbs)

SD card back into the unit, fire it up.. do a route, flyover/ simulate shows NEW ROAD FEATURES!! GPS works, hooray!

Only issue is that it is a bit finicky powering off, wants to restart if button held too long.

Your INSIGNIA is now running IGO 8.3 with recent maps!

Note that I did not need the basemap. it remains renamed OLD_basemap.fbl

    Additional Stuff:

One Blog post mentioned that if you use a USB cable to your GPS and connect with MS Active Sync you can change (after making a safe copy) a Device config file which is doing the boot-up pointing to the working directory on the SD card and the program name. This means you would not have to rename the IGO directory and IGO.exe. I think that the MIO POCKET package may have more on this if I even get it downloaded. Since I didn't need MIO, I used the older, quick-n-nasty approach.

Google search INSIGNIA NS-NAV01 MIO POCKET for some ancient blog post tips, a YouTube video or 2 if you want to research more.

Hope this is of some use. If anyone has a link to an old IGO 8.3 SD card image, pls drop a comment.

This should be also of use to those who found one of these old units MISSING the SD card Since INSIGNIA never provided replacements, you may be able to roll your own using this method.

    Best,
    /Z
