    Hide IP address/VPN??

    Question Hide IP address/VPN??

Too much time on my hands but was wondering if I could/should hide my IP address (I guess by using a VPN) but although it would be nice to surf anonymously I a) don't want to pay for it, b) don't want numerous ads etc which apparently come with most "free" VPN's and c) I think I understand that the VPN actually tracks (or can track) my searches/visits etc?

I've never bothered with VPN's except the free ones that can be installed as browser add-ons/extensions.
ZenMate was the last one I used, it seemed ok & did slow things down a little (full speed is only available to paid customers) but not so much as to make it unusable or even annoying.
I used it to get around Australia's stupid government forced site blocking for a while until I discovered it was just a matter of changing DNS servers.
My opinion is VPN's add another level of security between you & the rest of the world but I also believe being truly anonymous on the internet is a myth.
VPN hosts still need some form of logging to handle DNS requests, help sort customer issues, optimise services etc. etc., whether those logs are retained or deleted is up to the VPN providers.

That page is basically a GoldenFrog VPN advertisement, but it does make some good points about anonymity, privacy etc..

    Good luck!

    I've used sometime HideMy IP
It was even possible to get an IP address from the USA
But just like JmaCWQ wrote, how anonymous will you be.

    Thanks for that info.
Does seem there's no such this as truly anon

There are quite a few more recommended here but there's always a trade-off with speed and/or ads etc I guess.

I have never used a "good" free VPN. There is no such thing IMO. Mind you most paid ones are not much better. Ive tried a lot of them....

If you want to mask your IP I think the best and most efficient way to do it is get a cheap VPS set up a linux server (definitely not windows) on it and configure a VPN on it yourself. Picking a good reliable VPS provider is exactly like trying to find a good VPN provider however. From what Ive seen free is no good. Really nothing is for free theres always some caveat. Just like GPS maps..... someone has to buy them at some stage.

I've had boxes with a lot of different providers as well. Of everyone I have tried I have found 2 providers I think have good value for money and reliability at the same time. They are Ramnode (USA Based) and Liteserver (NL Based).

Both these providers you can hire a VPS that will do the job for around $3 a month. You dont need anything real flash. 256MB Ram and one core is fine for running OpenVPN and a small RUtorrent seedbox.

Heres some Hosts Id stay clear of....
    Virmach
Any Provider that uses ColoCrossing \ Anything Listed at LowendBox (Most that use this provider are scams)
PulsedMedia (They guy is cheap but is rude and doesnt know what hes doing with regards to security)
Any Seedbox provider (Because you wont have root access that you need to properly secure the box and most of them are insecure)
Anything that seems too cheap or good to be true that you see on some web hosting forum offers section.

The only and certainly safest way with the certainty that they cannot detect you via an IP address is to disconnect all connections to the internet.

It is an utopia to assume that you would not be found behind a VPN.
If that were the case, how would those packages know where to go if you were invisible?
At most, an investigation into your behavior or violations or illegal acts could cause a VPN a considerable delay, but they will find you in any case.

It is the same as hacking your computer, as long as they are still running in and out of the Pentagon, I don't have the idea of being able to stop them, possibly just making it a little harder.

This is my personal opinion, which I would like to share with another.

As well as the trustworthyness of VPN hosts etc., the location they are hosted can be a factor also...like if they're hosted in one of the
