I'm aware of this, which is why I said Garmin and Map folders as opposed to Garmin/Map. The xml file says gmapprom goes in Garmin and gmapsupp goes in Map.

Post #1 doesn't explain what JCV files are or whether I need them. The XML file says it is a Lane Assist Template. I found one in the hidden .System folder. It doesn't appear to be related to my problem.

I put the maps in the root folder of another GPS as gmapprom and got the error "can't unlock maps". Aren't all the maps posted here unlocked?

Only newer devices support both NT & NTU maps, but if you are travelling in countries that use

letters NTU is designed to accommodate them. Example is CN Russia NTU & Europe NTU.

Check your garmindevice.xml for <Name>UnicodeMaps</Name> to see if it is compatible with NTU Unicode maps

    DNX521DAB uses NT maps

    Default Old Garmin NUVi 205

Hello. Does anyone can help me with an issue with that model? It is quite old, right, but I want to use an OSM map on that device. I downloaded the map from one website, where was written that the maps there, are free. But when I copied that map on the device there is nothing on the screen. In Settings, I can see that map and it is checked, but is not visible. Also, I loaded that map in Garmin Base camp and it's shows me that the map has certain limitations. What are my options? Thanks.

    Hi Alesyz,

Did you just copy it at the root of the sd card or in a 'garmin' folder ?

Very interesting and informative thread. Members should take the time to understand the file structures of their Garmin devices as succinctly shown in #1 post. As a family we have 4 garmin devices, one each of our cars and are all of different models. The .xml file shown on #1 post is very helpful on where to place the new map files and what naming convention is applicable. And of course, I do have a question. Is it possible to delete the gmapprom.img (pre-programmed map) and replacing it with those new maps presented in here? Or are these new maps good only as supplemental map? The reasoning behind is that with only one map in the system, users don't have to tinker around to make sure they are using only the latest map instead of the old pre-program map. Thanks.

It very much depends on whether your device is an LM (Lifetime Maps) model or not. Most recent devices are but many older ones, particularly cheaper 'leader lines', are not.
    Specifically for each case:

    • If you have an LM model which saves the primary map as gmapprom.img then clearly don't replace it other than by regularly using the free updates via GarminExpress.
    • If the device doesn't have an LM entitlement then certainly if you're going to use later unofficial (unlocked) maps of the same version you may remove the older primary pre-programed map along with any associated ancillary files from the device and replace it with the newer unlocked map and other files of the same series. However it's much better to have unlocked maps on an inserted media card rather than in the devices internal memory. Safer if anything goes wrong, remove the card and remove the problem. Regardless, never run two different versions of the same series map even with one de-selected in settings.
