Someone else will have to show you how.

But first you should install that garmin express tool. If I am not mistaken your unit is old,
just like I have a few older units. You want to update firmware on the unit. Cost you nothing
and will get you bug fixes etc.

When that is done you should grab a unlocked map. Once you have that all you need to do
is copy the current map in your garmin unit to your computer as a backup. And then
replace the old map in the garmin gps and you should be good to go.

Welcome to the forum, your device most probably has run out of space for most current maps, but you didn't say what maps you are updating?
Don't forget about updating your safety camera data .gpi on your device in the POI folder

    If that is the case
Format an SD card FAT32 (<32GB )create a folder called Garmin and drop the downloaded unlocked map image in there.
If you want to put more maps than 2 you will just have to change their name when you want to use them.

To manager a second Map on microSD firmware of Nüvi 250 should be 5.10 or above.
In internal memory you can use up to 4 Map (gmapsupp.img, gmapprom.img, gmapprom1.img, gmapoem.img).
Last thing: the Device doesn't recognize NTU Maps, only NT, if you are interested to European Maps remember this issue

Hi, a good thread. Thanks for the info above but I have to admit that I don't understand how to download a map image. I see links in threads eg Garmin - Aust NZ City navigator but when it comes to selecting a link, it oft times takes me to a new website that I am unsure about. Could you provide a little more detail or point me to a tutorial or thread. I expect the same question has been asked and answered many times before. Thanks in advance for your time.

I think the first thing you should do is tell us what maps you want on what device and what you have already, then we will know the right direction to point you in.
GPSURL does not host any Maps etc, members share their information and host files on various hosting platforms(links to other Websites)

This tutorial will try to explain you the additions files, what they are used for and how to update these files.

I have an older Garmin Nuvi 370. I purchased it around 2008 when living in the USA. It came preloaded with North America and Europe maps. On return to Australia, I was able to source an unlocked Australian/NZ City Navigator map file - gmapprom.img renamed to gmapsupp.img - which I loaded onto a SD card. Since that time, I have been able to obtain an unlocked gmapprom file every couple of years which has suited my needs. I haven't looked for any other Garmin additional files as I didn't really understand their purpose. When visiting this site recently, I was interested in getting a more current Australian map and also a more current Europe map for an upcoming holiday. I read a couple of threads that seemed relevant and had links to map files on other platforms. A couple of links I followed, took me to sites that seemed you had to join to be able to download the files. I was wary and unsure of these sites due to my limited knowledge and experience with the process. So bottom line, I was looking for unlocked 2019 Aust/NZ City Navigator gmapprom and 2019 Europe gmapprom files. In a thread, I did locate a torrent for a Europe file that seemed to work; it is currently part way through a download (on Vuze) but is queued due to a lack of seeds. Re the Aust file, I located a link in a thread to a site where I was able to download a gmapprom.rar file. I have expanded the file but not yet renamed and loaded to a SD card to test it. I should also mention that I am a Mac user.

I'll certainly go through the tutorial. I'm sure it will answer a lot of my questions and also provide me with a better understanding of sourcing and updating files.

I find GPSURL an excellent source of information and its members most helpful. Thanks again.

Very easy, your device does not use any of the additional files so as you did before download the latest and change the name.

Just Copy the address and Paste into your browser,no need to join Mega, this is a direct link of my files.
IMO using download links from established members on this forum is far safer than a torrent you do not know its origin.

Australia+New Zealand_safetycam Download and copy to your POI folder

Thanks Garmin_Nuvi for the links. I have downloaded the files, expanded, changed the file name and loaded onto an SD card. Did a quick check of the updated Australian map and it appears to be working fine. Haven't tried the Europe map yet.
Regarding the safetycam file; I don't have a POI folder on my SD card. Only a folder labeled 'Garmin' where the gmapsupp file is located. Should I create a POI folder under Garmin or at same level? Or is the POI folder in the GPS?

Read the tutorial you gave me a link to. Now better understand the file types and their purpose in the newer GPS's.

I put the .gpi files in the POI folder on the device as they are very small,If you create a POI folder on the SD card on the same level your device will ask if you want to move it to the device.
When you get to the Europe map you might have to name it gmapsup1 so it does not clash with the AU & NZ maps.

Please use the Thumbs up/Thanks button
