Modern devices can be quite difficult to get into preboot unless you are very experienced. That's why some members make SD flash kits for them. You have the solution in this answer in another thread:

I mean it, thanks for the tip . . Yep, I just didn't register the part about "extract DIRECTLY." So, that did the trick!

So, if you could give me just a couple more hints to help deal with this in the future. If I do connect with Garmin Express to download maps (I have lifetime North America) and maybe make the mistake of doing a software install, what then? How do you roll that back or, as someone said, "downgrade" the firmware?

The flash I did was with a "custom SD flash kit only for HWID 2267 devices (Drive-DriveSmart40 & 50)" from user Firefox58. I did try the whole sequence with a Firmware Patcher,RGN Tool,Updater but I couldn't get the Updater to see my devise or get into the "preboot" mode.

Anyway, I know I'm asking a lot but I'll stop by saying thank you again for your assistance. I got maps!

    Thank you @FireFox58
I followed your steps after getting a microSD card and was able to load correctly the maps to my Garmin Drive 61 device!

It's great that you provided us with good solutions so promptly. Keep up the fantastic work. Your contributions to the community are very helpful.

If GE insists on a firmware update before giving you the LM map update then simply don't immediately disconnect and restart as instructed. Instead move the new GUPDATE.GCD from the device's .System folder to somewhere convenient on your PC, make a copy of it and patch it. It will be named gupdate_Patched.gcd when saved by the Patcher so rename it to gupdate.gcd and move it into the device's .System folder. Only THEN safely disconnect the device from the PC and boot it up if it doesn't start up automatically after removal. Because you previously removed the GSV protection by flashing an earlier version either with an RGN or by BIN files on microSD, it will update normally but with the firmware patched of course. Then you can update your LM map.

All modern garmin devices can attain preboot but garmin has chosen to make it really difficult for casual users to do it, no doubt for the users' devices own protection as well as frustrate attempts to modify their firmware. That's why the appearance of SD kits.

Thanks to all for the education contained in this forum . . Would you be able to create an SD Flash update for my Nuvi 2555LM (HWID 1371)?

    Model: nuvi 24x5 and 25x5 | HWID: 1371 | SWVS: 830 | MAP: Yes | GMA: Yes | MSV: --- | GVS: Yes |
    (MSV = software protection)

It's not necessary to patch the firmware of the nuvi 2555, it does not contain MSV.

P.S. To unlock the map, you only need

    ... And that's it.

Hello, what is a "HWID"? Is this the same as “Unit ID”? In device xml there is no string for HWID at all,
but there is a Unit ID, the same as can be displayed on the screen of the unit through the menu.

Anyway, could you help with new firmware? It’s a Garmin GPSMAP 64st, and Unit ID: xxxxxxxxxx.

There’s definitely some protection because my old maps from 60csx don’t work with it

EDIT,,, no I edited that out because HWID looks like 4 digits, but Unit ID is 10 digits.
In one of the files in the download fw patcher rar files it says this: 2285=GPSMAP 64st TWN.

In the whole instructions in the first post says to get your HWID,
but nowhere says why you need it or what to do with it.

EDIT,,, I found the HWID is 1859. But not the Updater says no updates available.
Does the rgn file need to have a special name?
