After almost a decade of using this hardware and software, first time Ive been this perplexed.
I work on a Coast Guard vessel as the OIC and am the resident 'expert' of maintaining our handheld GPS units and recording our activity. This is what started the other day:
After a day's patrol using my 78, I save the track using current date and select yes to the option of clearing the track in memory. After two weeks, I download all date to Bascecamp and create a log. Today, I notice when I plugged it in, all my saved tracks did not show up on BC. I unplugged and checked unit and all tracks were gone. I allowed unit to make a short track log, saved it plugged it in to computer and there was no saved log, just the current track. I then tried uploading saved tracks from previous dates into memory; it preserved them fine. Can't figure it out.

I then went to export all my tracks from an 86sci into BC. I checked the unit and there were over a dozen tracks...most were large, like over 10,000 points. I reduced the record interval for the future. Anyway, BC did not show any of these tacks except again - the current activity. I went back into the unit and all tracks were still there. tried again. Nada. I dug a little deeper - having not used this model much. I noticed on the track archive screen that the menu gives and option to 'save as track'. First question: what else would it be saved as?? I selected this option and observed the unit process it and voila - it appeared on BC when I next plugged in. Each other track I did this for also show. But, I noticed that even though I already selected 'save as track' once, it still gave me that option to do so again. Didn't compute to me.
Finally, I went into the settings menu and saw an "Output format" set to 'FIT" Ive never seen this before and do not know what it means. I selected the other option to "save as FIR and GPX" but I don't know what this will do.

Cant see my tracks on Basecamp for 86sci or 78sc

So, questions: What is FIT and do I need to have GPX selected too or is this a separate track file created as a stand alone gpx track that you can manipulate when you interface the unit as a mass storage device?
Second: before I told the gpx to "save as GPX" for each track, how are the tracks stored and how to I manipulate or download the file in basecamp?
Thanks
