    Default Dinosaur

Just been given an old StreetPilot c310 which appears to never even have existed on the garminn site so support is nil.
Maps on board are 15 years old. I got latest maps but no way could I transfer them even after trying for 2 full days. The maps for the machine are on a removable 250MB SDHC card. I put new maps on a micro SD with adaptor but cant be seen. I even copied an exact partition of original card to sd card but still cant be seen. Im running Win 8.1 Pro on my Desktop and also on my lappy. Garmin software is hit and miss and **** on both. I eventually slung it the nav in the dustbin after two days. On the third day I had an idea of installing Win7 and trying that. Long shot but it worked fine. Updated original card while holding my breath. Still wont read exact copy using sd card though. Not much room for maps with 250MB card though, managed to get England on it.
Nah then, does anyone know if this supports POI's like speedcams and where do they live. I cant access OS to view on machine, (dont know how) only the card which simply displays gmapsupp and gmapsupp.unl. No folders.
Also does anyone know if I buy a bigger SDHC card will it be seen or not. SD card is not.

SP c3x0 series is a 'region-only' device without a visible file system. If you connect to a PC you'll see nothing in Explorer however the device may show in Device Manager under GARMIN Device if you have Garmin USB Drivers loaded to the computer.

Only one detail map can be read by the device. The map is contained in Region 10 (hex 0A) and that region is actually the physical SD card. When you transfer mapping data with MapInstall, that is the region where the data is sent. You can also add a map manually using an SD card reader, placing the gmapsupp.img and unl file in a Garmin root folder.

The card can be FAT32 or FAT16 format however the map image size cannot exceed 2,147,483,647 Bytes which is 2 gibibytes ("binary gigabytes") less one Byte. 2GB cards are "decimal gigabytes", i.e. they contain less that 2,000,0000 Bytes usually. Regardless, as SP c3x0 is limited to recognizing a map size which is only a little more that the size of a 2GB card there's little advantage in using a 4GB or larger card because the map size can only be increased by about 140-150 MB at most anyway. Frankly though you can use a much higher capacity card such as SDXC cards of 64GB or larger if you reformat them from exFAT to FAT32.

I don't believe SP 3x0 supports *.gpi files like safety cams. I have a c310 and can help if you need more info.

    Further assistance please.
Tried the unit out, bit laggy but not too bad for its age I suppose but it drops gps signal now and then. I bought a GPS/GLONASS external aerial for it which has a female SMA connecter on the end which does not fit (lying chinaman) Someone told me that it needs a MCX connecter (male or female not sure)
Can you shed any light on this please mate and perhaps point something suitable out for me. I had this given and dont even need it as my car and phone iGO are more reliable. Thing is I bought the aerial and the memory card for it now and its into my ribs for over a tenner now - ouch lol so now I have to get it working properly..
Cant believe that Amazon are still selling these for £99

Well we can't have you 10 quid out of pocket now can we? Certainly the SP's external aerial's connector is not SMA, it's indeed a (female) MCX socket. So what you need is a compatible GPS antenna of 1575.42 MHz with a (male) MCX plug, or buy an SMA to MCX adaptor/pigtail. If the seller has wrongly advised you that the antenna he supplied will fit your c310 and you bought it from AliExpress or eBay, or elsewhere but paid with PayPal, then you can try for a return or full or partial refund. You may be able to just keep it and get a some brass back enough to pay for an adaptor? Some sellers will just refund without fuss and no return when they realize they're at fault so as to avoid a dispute or even negative feedback.

As for Amazon, that's just a very old listing still on their server. There hasn't been new stock of these devices generally available for years now, maybe a couple of dusty boxes lying out in the stock reserve of some hick retailer somewhere.

Thanks a lot. Will this one do the job

2 for £2.52. That will make me over £12 into it now. Hope I can sleep at night lol.

That amazon link is active. I clicked add to basket and it took me to the cash out and wanted £99. Phew that was close.

By the way heres the one that I bought but it was a bloke on Ebay who said it would fit.. No biggy

Oh well, "in for a penny, in for a pound" as the old saying goes. I guess another two and a half nicker won't break you .

For me using a US IP address, the UK amazon site shows it as "Currently Unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock." However, when i changed to a UK proxy and slipped in a random UK Postcode it let me add it for checkout too. Goodness knows where the heck they got such old stock, Garmin hasn't made them for about 15 years.
Great you're now sorted anyway. On the plus side, those old things are pretty bulletproof. The biggest weakness is in fact in the early versions wiring which was connected to the cradle and they won't take any rough treatment at all. The later ones had a removable 'plug in' cable which is more robust. Cheers.

16GB SDHC card arrived. Does not work. Behaves just the same as an SD card. Tried copying using Acronis, Aeome Backupper sector by sector which gives exact copy and partitions the remainder off. Can copy maps direct from mapsource if the card is in a usb to card adaptor but wont copy if the card is within the satnav itself. I think its going back in the bin again. I dont even think I could give it away as a present to someone I dont like as I dont dislike anyone that much. Strange how you sometimes come across crap like this. You know its crap but you still spend hours fooking about with it maybe thinking that you can better it in some way or another but know you cant. Ive got a 2gb sdhc card on its way from China. See if that works when if it arrives.

This suggests there is nothing wrong with the SDHC card you have.

Please don't bin the c310, i do doubt it has any problem other than it can only read the original standard version 1.x sd cards as it was designed to do when manufactured.

Try this: Right click the 16GB SDHC in Disk Management and delete the current volume on it, then make a small partition of no more than 2GB leaving the rest of it unallocated. Format the partition as FAT16 preferably (Windows refers to it as just "FAT"), or use FAT32 as the SP can read either format. Do a deep format (uncheck "Quick Format"). Many larger cards can 'mimic' a standard SD in that fashion, but by no means all are suitable and some will work like that in some old Garmins but not in other old models. If it still doesn't work then scroung around for an old 1 or 2GB card, someone you know will have one lying around for sure or just wait for the card you've ordered from China.
