The purpose of this Post is to present my selfmade software, ManagePoi, with whom manage, configure, and create files. GPI with his own POI and load them on Garmin devices.
This software was born from the need to organize your own POI and to quickly update their devices.
This software allows, once created their own "Profiles" to create the files .GPI safely and quickly, freeing you from having to set every time this or that parameter (I am referring to the Audio Alerts, the Proximity Alerts, the Icons, etc...)
Still not to be determined "perfect", in fact I expect a series of feedback from users of the Forum that will enable and aid the development of the program.

    Installing the Program
The program requires no installation, simply extract from the Archive the Folder ManagePoi (including all subfolders) and copy it on your PC at any location of the disk (I recommend NOT using the DeskTop as the working folder, a direct HDD folder is better (ex: D:\Software).
The software package is composed by the root folder (ManagePoi) with inside the executable file (ManagePoi.exe) and a series of accessories files that must reside in the same directory as the executable.
There are 4 subfolders (\Icons, \Audio, \Filters, \Doc), whose content will talk about in UserManul present in \Doc folder.

    The software requires:
    • A PC with Audio (for Preview of the Proximity Alerts)
    • An active Internet connection (for the location of the POI using Google Maps)
    • You have installed on your PC the POI Loader software (required) and GPSBabel (if you intend to use the function of filtering POI by geographical area)
    • The CSV Source Files in a PC Folder (either local or network located). This software does NOT make Automatic downloads of the POIs, they must be Downloaded and prepared beforehand by the User.

    The Program interface
The software interface looks like the following image:

The software allows the management of personal "Profiles".
A profile is nothing more than a Name combined with a series of POIs which are loaded from a certain Source Folder and will be processed according to the particular settings, in another Destination Folder.

The software allows the display of the "POI" in a personal list and allows the editing (changing the coordinates and description) and Search function. Geolocation with Google Maps is also possible
and Street View as well ...

Fast Switching from Standard icons (22x22) to Large icons (44x44) and vice versa
Files .GPI using Large Icons are identified by "_LI" suffix (LargeIcons) added to the File Name

An advanced "Filtering" sistem is available via button "Filter"
The software allows you to Filter POIs of our profile by geographic areas (eg all POIs of the French territory, or Italian one, or any geographical area).
Filters are applied to the list of POI RunTime, no changes are written to the Original Source Files.
The following image shows the application of a filter (France) to a series of Internationals POI (SCDB).
Any Filtering operation can be removed and/or changed at any time. The filtered data are present in the software memory.
This will only take effect on the production of .GPI File, which will contain only the filtered points.
Transactions of filtering may be consecutive, such as:
    • Load Profile POI
    • Applying a filter and generation of the corresponding GPI.
    • Applying another filter and generation of corresponding GPI.
    • And so on ...

Once applied a Filter the Main View become as follow:
Infos about the Filter in use and the number of Points filtered are shown (Totals and for each file).
Proceeding Exporting Filtered Data Profile (Files *.Gpx and File .GPI) will be saved in a subfolder of the destination (in the example picture above will create a folder D:\Garmin\POI\ManagePoi\SCDB_WORLD\UK_ROI.
The file will contain the final GPI, as a suffix, the name of the filter (SCDB_UK_ROI.gpi).
This technique allows you to change filter RunTime and generate the data for different geographical areas without overwriting any Data and without setting anything.

The software allows you to add and manage your own Filters:
    • Generate your personal Polygon Filter in the following format
Latitude Longitude (<Space> separated), each row is a vertex of the polygon.

[Windows] ManagePoi by FireFox58 - Garmin POI Manager

[Login or Register to remove this advertisement]

The first line must be IDENTICAL to the last (closed polygon)
      Here's an example:

    61.21366 -0.67070
    51.47592 02.39989
    50.05658 -0.07852
    49.64336 -7.25055
    51.92508 -11.08879
    59.83025 -8.43492
    61.21366 -0.67070

    • Rename the file as <MyFilter>.Flt (give it a name that identifies the Zone)
    • Copy it into the subfolder \Filters.
    • Add, if you want, a JPG image that displays the filter you just created (the image file must have the same name of the Filter. The size of the image is, as standard, 500x500 pixels, different images will be resized automatically to fit the pane window.
    • ReRun ManagePoi and your filter will be shown in the List of available ones.

The software has an Advanced Edit feature, this is an EXTENDED Configuration feature:

More details about this software in the User Manual (ManagePoi_by_FireFox58.pdf) present in \Doc SubFolder (Italian and English languages).

I'm ready to discuss with you any variation or addon, Moon excluded, to enhance the performances and the usability of this software.

    Have Fun ...

I have all my speedcams in .gpx format (made with Mapsource), how to import that files, as I understand it works only with .csv , btu the program does not read .csv made by Basecamp/Mapsource (error in lines all the time).

Yes, the software read CSV only.
It uses GPX file format in processing POI to input POILoader.
To recognize CSV the fields order and separators must be as reported in Manual.
Longitude, Latitude, Description (colon as separator)
You have on option to exchange Latitude & Longitude while reading.

I think GPSBabel is the best solution

Just for info, I am working on some changes:
    • Migration from Google Map to OSM Maps. Google requires an API key and a Credit Card associated to a Billing account.
    • If I have time an import procedure from GPX too

ManagePoi by FireFox58 - Garmin POI Manager
    (actual version: 1.6.0 - April 2019)

    Version 1.6.0 of 14/04/2019

    • Changed Base Maps for Viewing and Editing POI, from Google Map to OSM Maps.
3 Map Layers available: Street Map, OpenTopo Maps, Satellite Maps.
    • Use of Google Maps manteined (Entry UseOSMMaps=0)
    • SOX.Exe (POI Loader Audio Wave conversion utility) included in Package
    • English Language PDF Manual added
    • Minor Adjustments

    Use of OSM Maps
From version 1.6.0 OSM Maps are available for these features as an alternative to Google Maps.
This decision was taken following the modification of Google's Policy, which also requires for the sporadic display only the acquisition of an API key linked to a Billing count on a Credit Card.

In order to use the Reverse Geocoding services I used static JavaScript Libraries (in this way the loading is faster), present in the subfolder \JSLibrary.

The new OSM Maps have nothing to envy to those of Google, in fact in some respects they are even better.
I inserted 3 Map Layers, selectable via the "control panel" at the top right of the display screen.

    The 3 Layers are:
StreetMaps (default) – OSM Street Maps

TopMaps – Topographic Maps, source OpenTopo Maps

    Satellite – source Esri_WorldImagery

ManagePoi by FireFox58 - Garmin POI Manager
    (actual version: 1.7.0 - May 2019)

    Version 1.7.0 of 12/05/2019

    • Added View on Map (only for OSM Maps, UseOSMMaps=1) of a full POI Category with automatic pan of Map. The Data can be displayed either in program Window or directly in the default Browser.
    • Added Preview on Device(such as Icons, Audio and POI Description will appear on your Garmin)
    • Added .GPX Files Importfunction (Waypoints, Routes and Tracks). These files are automatically converted to .CSV and added to Profile
    • Minor Adjustments

Viewing a Full POI Category on Map
Starting fron version 1.7.0 I added the possibility to view an entire Category of POI on Map with Auto Zoom. The POIs will be shown on the Map with their standard Icon (22x22).
The Map provides the 3 standard Layers (Street, Topo and Satellite)
Pressing the Button "View All POIs" a Window will open with the complete display of the Category of POIs.

The same display can be made directly in the default Browser via the button "On Browser"
All POIs displayed on the Map are clickable, a Popup will show Description and Coordinates of the Point.
The window loading time depends on the Number of POIs and on the PC power, on my Computer (quite powerful) it takes about 4-5 seconds to display 1000 points.

    Device Preview
Pressing the button "Device Preview" you can open a Preview Window shows the result you will get on your Garmin.
    Several options are available:
Selecting of a Standard oo Large Icon.
Click on Audio Preview Button to listen to the Audio Message associated with the POI Category
Click on Icon to show “POI Info” Panel how it will appear on Device

    GPX File Import
From version 1.7.0 it’s possible to Import .GPX Files through a dedicated interface.
To access this feature, press the button "GPX Import" on Profiles page.

A window will open that will allow:
    1. To Open a .GPX File (Left Panel), software remembers last directory used. The File will be displayed with the typical syntax of an XML file highlighted.
    2. Exclude/Include in the Conversion, in addition to the Waypoints (default) also the Tracks and/or Routes eventually present in the GPX File
    3. To Convert GPX File in CSV (Right Panel)
    4. If necessary, Edit the CSV file by adding, removing or modifying the text
(clicking on the line number in the right panel will highlight the CSV file line and at the same time the corresponding section line from the GPX file on the left panel)
    5. To Save CSV File into your Profile.

The software proposes a Destination folder (that of the selected Profile) and a File Name (the same as the GPX File with CSV extension).
You are free to choose File Name and Path
The Import procedure can be repeated as many times as you want and for all the Files you want, it is sufficient to repeat the operations from Point 1 onwards.
The Imported CSV Files can then be added to your Profile and processed normally together with the others.

ManagePoi by FireFox58 - Garmin POI Manager
    (actual version: 1.7.1 - May 2019)

    Version 1.7.1 of 25/05/2019

    • Setting “Convert to Utf-8”, can now be activated for every single CSV file and not only for Global. This allows you to treat the Source Files individually.
The Setting is present in the Main Page and allows the immediate conversion into Utf-8 "on the fly", selecting / deselecting the CheckBox Checking the Source Files and converting them is re-executed
    • The "Find and Remove Duplicate POI" function can now be activated and running properly. Duplicate POIs are removed from every single Source File, the removed lines are indicated in the Log File.
    • Added Image Preview function in the "Advanced POI Edit" window.
The same window has been expanded allowing greater visibility
    • Fixed an issue that prevented saving changes in certain situations after running EDIT
    • Minor Adjustments

    Convert to Utf-8
"Convert To Utf-8" allows the conversion (Recoding) of the Source File to Utf-8. Since it is very difficult to establish the encoding of a file, a double encoding is performed to perform this conversion, first from original to Unicode then from Unicode to UTF-8. These operations are carried out in memory, the original Files are NOT touched.
Selecting / deselecting the CheckBox will re-execute the Reading of the Source Files and their Conversion.
Apply this Setting ONLY to Files Encoded in ANSI, if a File is already Encoded in Utf-8 the Double Conversion can alter the Character Encoding. If you see strange characters try inserting / removing this option
The same applies to the "Apply to All" CheckBox to extend the setting to all Profile Files.

    (actual version: 1.7.2 - June 2019)

    Version 1.7.2 of 08/06/2019

    • Added Export To KML function, to export Source CSV Files of Profile currently loaded in KML Google Earth format (Keyhole Markup Language).
All WayPoints present in every single CSV File will be exported, included extra infos eventually added in Advanced Edit feature (Comment, Street Address, Web site and eMail address, Images).
    • Minor Adjustments

Export Files CSV to Google Earth KML format
Starting from version 1.7.2 I added the possibility to export CSV Files of current Profile to Google Earth KML format (Keyhole Markup Language).
Pressing the Button "Export To KML" a Window will open with the possibility to select:
    1. The CSV Source File to export.
    2. Name and Path of Destination KML File.
The software reminds the last used Path and suggests the same File Name as the Source CSV File (you can modify it anytime)
    3. Marker Color (well known as PushPin) and CheckBox “Include Images in KML”.
This last one, if activated allows to include in exported File also the images eventually added to each single POI with funcion Advanced Edit
    4. Click on “Export to KML” to create KML File, directly loadable by Google Earth and/or Google Maps
All the information in the CSV File including those added in Advanced Edit mode, ie Comments, Address, Website and Mail address will be inserted in the KML File, and of course the personal image eventually added

    Google Earth Note:
Any images included, if present, will be placed in the "images" sub-folder next to your KML file.
Google Earth does not allow the storage of images with relative paths (or better, they are loaded correctly the first time but if the File is saved in "My Places", this link is lost and the images will no longer be displayed correctly).
To overcome this the image files path is absolute (Path complete)
If the files are moved to another location on the disk, in addition to remembering to copy the "images" subfolder as well, the KML file must be reloaded.

What you get on Google Earth is similar to this …

    Google Maps Note:
KML Files can also be safely uploaded to Google Maps (via the Menu button -> Your Places -> MAPS -> CREATE MAP -> Import).
Google Maps DOES NOT import any Images that may be included, they will be imported manually for each single WayPoint in your KML File.

What you get in Google Maps is similar to this …
