Default File locations and space issues

I have a Nuvi 2460 which has served well as my guide around Europe for many years. I've run into two issues that I've not dealt with before.

I let Garmin Express update my base map (CN North America) and it expanded beyond the internal storage of 8gb and created a MAPS directory on my SD card. Not in itself a big deal except for needing bigger SDcards.

I'm trying to load a supplemental map (CN Europe) and sticking the gmapprom(1).img files into a SDCard/GARMIN directory works fine. The download from here includes a bunch of other files (ASR, SID, SqLite,JVC, etc.) that I've never tried to use before, but depending on exactly what they offer, it would be nice to try. What exactly do they offer?

Also, I NEVER expect to use the device in North America, so the basemap is really a waste of disk space. I use the device to avoid data charges on my phone, and deal with being out of roaming range.

According to garmindevice.xml, most of the "extra" files are supposed to live in the /.SYSTEM/ subdirectories. There are, of course, all the same category of files in those locations already there from my recent basemap update.

    So my issues are:

    1) My device storage doesn't have enough space left to just dump all the ASV, SID etc. files into /.SYSTEM.
    2) Can I just start deleting the existing files from those directories (and just lose that basemap functionality?)
    3) Is there are way to just delete the basemap and replace it with the EUROPE map (I can never let Garmin Express attach, if that's important).
    4) Can I delete the SdCard/MAPS files and just lose functionality, or do I risk bricking the the device?

Ok, it seems the easiest/safest thing to do is just get a bigger SD card.
Please do not delete the BaseMap gmapbmap.img your device cannot work without it, the maps that come with the device & get updated by Garmin Express are called PreProgrammedMaps gmapprom.img etc.
The only maps I suggest you delete is gmapprom.img & D9644010A.img,for that I suggest using a tool like

this will show US ALL(3.13 GB) & Canada & Mexico (0.98 GB)
The sub folders ASR,JCV,SID & SQLite only delete NA files of the same file extension of the Europe ones. You will have to

of the device to get the Voice control to work properly.

Garmin Express gives you the option to choose what to update Maps or Software .
Before you start make a back up and make sure it is charged.
I don't know what files are on your SD card at the moment.

When I "updated" my basemap with Garmin Express, the only file on my SDcard was Garmin/gmspsupp.img taken from the 2023.20 post, the "custom.rar" containing ROI.UK.Iceland.

After the update, there was now a MAP directory that had D9644010A.img, D9644010A.gma, and D9644010A.unl and gmappupdate.gsd was added to the Garmin folder.

Following another post, I got a larger SD Card, moved the MAP folder to it, then moved all the various files of the recent 2023.20 NTU post into a new Garmin folder (with ASV, JCL, SID, and SQLite subdirectories).

When I restarted the Nuvi, it found two copies of North America (my basemap) and no Europe.

What about the two Europe .img files they need to go in the Map folder on the SD card

    SD card\Map\D6210250A.img or (EUS.img) 2.96 GB
    SD card\Map\D6159250A.img or (EUN.img) 3.02 GB

D9644010A.img, D9644010A.gma, and D9644010A.unl and gmappupdate.gsd are the Mexico & Canada part of N. America you said you don't need NA so delete.

Follow the layout I gave you ,download and use

to delete the other part of N. America from the device.

Use the "Thanks" button so we can see what & which post you are downloading from.

The files I downloaded include D6210250A and D6159250 as empty folders and gmapprom.img and gmapprom1.img. Any idea which is which?
I just left the MAP folder as downloaded (two empty folders and gmapprom, gmapprom1). Looks to be working correctly, although I don't know how to test the ASR, SID, or JVC stuff without driving the route.
