Hello!
Can some Garmin guru guide me a little?
I have an aftermarket built-in Kenwood navigation & MM headunit in a car.
It has built-in "OEM CN Europe 2016 NTU" maps. With the help of Garmin Express I am able to update to some "OEM 2018.0" maps, which are a bit dated for my area. So I started digging for some fresher maps and stumbled upon this wonderful resource!
Naturally, I have tried Europe NTU 2019.30 maps first - but my device cannot load them properly for some reason (it starts loading, then progress bar disappears without any error message, but newer map does not load, also it is not shown in available map list). I have tried various unlocking techniques with the same result - nothing.
I then tried to load NT 2019.20 maps - which worked without a hassle!
My question is:
1) am I missing some extra step to get NTU maps working? Because it seems to me this device supports them out of the box.
not related, but would be cool if someone could explain to me:
2) there are Voice updates in GarminExpress, but headunit keeps using built-in outdated files. Is there any solution?
3) I cannot add any additional "car" icons, although there is a wide choice in GarminExpress app for my device.
Here is file, if that helps (I think I've deleted all unique Serial Nr. entries in that file)
I've been on the scene for a while but I wouldn't classify myself as a guru, nor have I owned a Kenwood. Here are some of my best answers that I can give to your questions.
1. Your not missing any extra steps to get NTU maps working it seems. Either your device is compatible with NTUnicode maps or not and in this case it doesn't. Generally, NTU maps are geared toward newer normal GPS units such as the Garmin Drive. NT is compatible with any Garmin-manufactured product or any product that uses their software.
2. Nobody as of yet has shown me the file system inside a Kenwood so I can't be sure 100% on this but make sure that ASR, SID and G2X files that are included with the files are in the Garmin folder.
3. There should be an option to do that in the "Manual Install" section.
I don't own this device, but I'm sure you can just create a folder for vehicles and voices and up date it the same way as you updated the map. Your Garmindevice.xml does not show any info about ASR ,G2X or JCV very strange?
Do you have a model number like these ?

I'm not 100% but shouldn't your SD card/USB device look like this ?

Mine is DNX5160BTS.
Yeah, folder structure of the SD card looks similar to yours after GarminExpress update. Europe map is split into North and South - that's why I went with the NTU map first.
I think my device does not support ASR, G2S, JCV and SQLite files, as those folders are absent after an official update. I've tried loading them anyway with NTU 2019.30 map content, but I can't tell if they are working, as the map is not loading properly.
To have an updated Voice/Vehicle files - do I need to rename them as seen in the GarminDevice.xml file, or just leave filename which GarminExp gave them?
Did you put EU south in a Map folder ?
<Path>Garmin/Map</Path>
<FileName>D621008A.img</FileName>
I'am uploading the English voices now, no need to rename them the Garmindevice.xml will update it's self with the contents of the unit ie new voices and vehicles
Yes, of course - South part in Map folder.. I've just tried it all again - did not worked. Same with voices and vehicle icons. I also can't add any custom POIs (speedtraps etc.) to the device via POILoader (well, it loads them on SD card, but unit does not load anything).
I guess it's just somehow locked?
Anyway, thanks for your time - I'll just stuck with NT releases then.
If you have any more helpful advises I'll be glad to try them out.
My brother will travel to Italy at the end of the month. He has a Garmin Nuvi 40. I need the City Navigator Italy Greece 2019.30. I do not know if it is compatible with UNICODE. Thank you!
