Creating IMG map with only some tiles of another IMG map

Sorry if it comes out duplicated.

    Hi All

I am trying to produce an IMG (I will call small.IMG) from a garmin map in IMG format (such as Garmin-MENA-2021-10-fid-8431-a-4 = big.IMG) retaining just some tiles of it (for the example, just Egypt). Let us assume that a gmap version of the map is NOT available, so answers stating get a gmap of the map is not the solution!

While I am happy to hear about other alternatives if there are, to generate the small.IMG I wish to use Basecamp, as with it I can produce a good IMG selecting the tiles that I am interested in using a graphic way (maps / install maps, then select device and then select the wished tiles). That to work requieres having the map installed in Basecamp. And yes, I "install" it to a virtual device, and with javava device manager I make it visible again in Basecamp etc.

    Way A
Creating a gmap from an IMG - this would be the most strait forward way but I did not find any tool for that (and I know this way works because I started with some gmap downloaded and it works). So, once a gmap folder is available for bigmap.IMG, just putting it under ProgramData/Garmin/Maps would be installed in Basecamp and I would be able to install it in the device etc.
I tried to do this using Maptk. For some maps it works. For some other, it fails (not able to handle big size maps or any other issue, not sure....). Tried to solve the issues with the developer to no avail.
So, question A: is there a way/tool that is able to create gmaps from IMGs flawlessly? If yes, how/which tool?

    Way B
Create an installable set using a reg file - this is the less direct way, and I made it partially work, so ....
I tried to achieve this using Gmaptool + mkgmap, using the split functionality. If big.IMG is not too big, it creates a set instalable via reg, but has some pitfalls. If it is too big, it fails. I discovered this trying to get Ireland.IMG from a Europe.IMG from OSM / Computerteddy. Luckily, Computerteddy has sections of Europe - unfortunatelly Ireland was in two different sections. So, I took Big-Section1.IMG and produced set1 (using gmaptool+mkgmap), installed it using the reg, and created smallsection1.IMG Then did same to Big-Section2.IMG. Then joined smallsection1.IMG and smallsection2.IMG ....
Anyhow, using this route, the pitfall is that the output of gmaptool+mkgmap has the upper zoom levels empty, no cue of geography, just the blank rectanbles of the tiles, and one has to zoom so much to see information on the map that it becomes to detailed to select the tiles. It becomes error prone so you put too many or not enough in the selection. I do not know why basecamp is not showing the base map when that my IMG is loaded. I wonder if the solution is making something transparent or what....
So, question B1: is there a way/tool that is able to create flawlessly such reg registry sets? (so that size is not an issue?)
And, question B2: how can I make so that the base map is shown when I have empty zoom levels or how to avoid having empty zoom levels or how to add base map to the IMG so to avoid the lack of positional cues at the upper zoom levels?

    As resume:
Starting with Big.IMG, whish to produce Small.IMG (just some tiles of big.IMG). Wish not to lose routing information, etc.
    a) Get to install Big.IMG in Basecamp so that can be installed in device
    b) Way A: Big.IMG -> gmap / How? (no Maptk!)
    c) Way B: Big.IMG -> set "reg installable" + avoiding empty zoom levels. How?

Some images to try to explain easier:

What one sees when installing maps from Basecamp when basecamp is using a gmap map:

No way to obtain a full working small map from map with full coverage. GMP files is only image, but for searching, routing and traffic you need other specific files that come only with PC installation set!

ah... my question was not fully well formulated.

If I have the full set of files of a garmin map to copy into the GPSr (not only IMGs), is it possible to create a full gmap folder?

When I only have big.IMG what is the best way I can get the small.IMG losing the smalest possible information for the retained area and how do I solve the problem I have with the empty zoom levels ?

    Thanks

Your question is perfectly clear, and Hirvitie, in above post has already replied that it is NOT possible to extract a reduced MapSet from a larger MapSet.
The only way is to create a MapSet, better with MapInstall, starting from the MapSource version Maps (.gmap folder) installed on the PC.
Technically it would be possible to do this, through the Reverse Engineering of an IMG transforming it into .gmap version.
Any IMG created with this "artifice" is NOT usable on GPS

    Thanks for your view.
Nonetheless, as I explained, I am doing it (big.IMG-> GMaptool+mkgmap -> reg mapset -> Basecamp -> install small.IMG to GPSr) using tools widely available although the "toolchain" is not as friendly as I would like and sometimes it fails. But outcoming IMG is fully usable on GPSr. Address search is awkward but routes well from waypoint to waypoint.

And yes, I already said having the .gmap of the "big" is straitforward and works perfectly, but not always the .gmap is available.

As far as I have find out by now, it looks that garmin IMGs circulating come from installations in receivers, and .gmaps from installations in Basecamp. And those with OSM source are IMGs made from mp but the tools are not available to create .gmaps

Looks that .gmaps are solely a product that garmin has the knowledge to create.

Probably I have to reformulate my question...

=> what I have to make to add the far away zoom layers of gmapbmap.img to another .img with emply far away zoom layers ...?

the "toolchain" is not as friendly as you would like it to be because these are procedures not officially managed by Garmin, made with third party applications.
In any case, the IMGs produced with this system are not reliable, I would never use them

If you want see in Basecamp and Mapsource basemap layer you may get any working basemap from any Garmin mapset (usually product.img) and replace old map definition polygons with new from your mapset tdb file. I performed this task with gmapedit many year ago.
