Garmin Oregon 7xx doesn't have GSV Protection, only MSV in present.
You don't need tu put Device in Pre-Boot mode, simply flash new Patched Firmware using WebUbdater

I kindly ask for you help. I have a problem with new Edge explore. HWID 3011. I installed Garmin usb drivers, tried to run updater with administrator privileges and xp sp3 compatibility mode. I have no clue what I'm doing wrong

Is there any other option to upgrade the firmware? The updater.exe crashes as soon as it starts the update process. I tried it the way it's descibed in the forum.

If you talk about Garmin Edge Explore 820, this device has not GSV Protection. You can Update it using WebUpdater
    Try with Patched Firmware below

That is the device, not sure Garmin express doesn't give me 7.11 update but I do have a copy of it from friends. Just didn't update from 7.09 as everything seems to work okay and Garmin express didn't give it for my model.

this is a link to the GUPDATE.GCD 7.09

    I tested GUPDATE.GCD 7.09, the results are:
    1) the device seems to have an HWID = 1420 (unknown by Table of HWIDs)
    2) the firmware seems to have neither GSV, neither MSV (no matches by FirmwarePatcher)

    I don't know what to do ...

Thank you for your answer Firefox58,

    It's not edge 820. It's newer model:

with 3 inch screen. I think I should't use the firmware you made for 820.

I can't find any information regarding patching this model

You can't use updater.exe because it doesn't support the most of sports model now. But it does not matter in your case. Express could help but there is no released version of software on Garmin servers. I had checked it directly and I can confirm this fact. Probably you have a new model and initial version was 300 that is based on APAC and Japan SW for a more older device. You need wait for a release of next version and make a request.

Have a drive 61 HWID 2588 currently at firmware 4.4. Would like to use older topo maps, and am a bit confused by the many comments on methodology. I tried replacing gupdate.gcd with perry version 4.0, shut down and reboot. It did not change the firmware back. If the upper left corner is pressed "SYSTEM" appears at the top of the screen on boot up. Is this what is necessary to roll back the firmware, or something else? Secondly there are comments from Firefox58 that there is no need to roll back firmware prior to using his SD card flash. But earlier comments imply it is better to roll back prior to the SD card flash kit.
Recommendations appreciated for approach and which flash kit version to use (3.7-4.2?!
    Thanks

Maybe with Garmin Express you can reinstall the same Firmware.
In this case, BEFORE disconnect the Device you can pick the GUPDATE.CGD up from memory.
This could be usefull in searching for Patch.
