That guide you linked above should be used with caution. As with the similar one in the OP here it uses an older version (V1.10) of Universal Patcher. The current latest V1.30 is posted by Akyta here:

Other than the guide by the soft's author, big-bang, none of the available guides seem to mention the inherent dangers of using an RGN file with other than safe-naming of XXXX01000.xxx.RGN ("XXXX" is the used firmware's 4 numeral HWID [crucial] and "xxx" is it's 3 numeral firmware version [not so crucial]). Even if one of the middle numerals "01000" is removed, Updater will not preform an important check because other than that safe-naming convention doesn't require Updater.exe to check the actual HWID of the device with the RGN's firmware's HWID therefore flashing is forced. That may result in a wrong boot.bin being flashed with the result that the devices regions for Boot BLK and X-Loader are wrongly overwritten likely rendering the device irretrievably hard-bricked i.e. Dead.

This is a custom SD flash kit only for HWID 2268 devices (Only for Drive-DriveSmart60 & 70 and DriveTrack 70):

    How to use:
Download the above ZIP file then extract directly to a clean TransFlash or microSD by opening the file with a suitable extraction program (Windows Explorer in Win 10 was used to compress it). A FAT16 TF card as small as 32MB should be big enough and if using a larger card, i.e. a microSD of 64GB or more which is normally formatted as exFAT, you must firstly reformat it to FAT32 only. Ensure the device is fully OFF (not in standby), insert the card and power on. If battery is low connect to a suitable power source to power it. 'Loader' will appear on screen for some time and the device will boot up when the flash of patched fw is complete. Do not disturb or turn off the device while it's flashing or you will likely brick it. The first command the device receives is to delete any gupdate.gcd file for the hidden .System folder. If it's not present that command will fail but the remaining commands will still be executed.

When the flash has complered remove the card, in its root with the other 3 original BINs will be a new file named 154.bin. That's a backup of the device's non-volatile memory region and may save your device at a later date. You would be best to keep a copy of it somewhere safe for as long as you have the device.

This is a complete flash for patched Version 5.70. If you have a lower original version on the device this will fully update it to V5.70. Later patched versions may then be loaded with a GCD file provided you haven't flashed back to an ORIGINAL (unpatched) firmware subsequently. That's because initial flashing with either patched RGN or BIN files removes the GVS protection so that a modified/patched GCD is accepted in future versions. Use is entirely at your risk. I don't have a HWID 2268 device to test it on but all care possible has been taken in it's preparation.

    Hi!
Could you, please, help how to obtain the original firmware file (*.GCD) for the Garmin DriveSmart 51 LMT-D device HWID: 2586?
I cannot neither find the file on the device neither on the support site - it redirects to use Garmin Express...

    Thanks a lot!

In any case however you can connect your GPS to the computer under MTP mode (set by holding down the top right of your screen in the volume menu) and then going into your folder settings and enabling the feature to show hidden folder extensions. The gupdate.gcd file will be found in the .System folder.

Dear Vladan, thanks a lot for your support. Is there any way to check if device is locked? Or simple to try with different ways like .unl file etc?

I have Nuvi 140T - it is like Nuvi 40. Can I apply your instructions on this device?

Your nuvi 140 doesn't have MSV protection but does have GSV so it can use maps unlocked with latest gimgunlock without firmware patching. An UNL file won't work because it also has GMA protection.

Used the micro SD card process to flash on a refurbished DriveSmart 61 (HWID - 2588) and it took less than a minute to get it working. The unit now recognizes multiple region maps with no issue....THANK YOU

    Hi,
Can you please help me to make patch for Garmin SmartDrive 51 LMT-S, its firmware number is 2586. I tried to follow you instruction but could not success. When I installed unlock map for EU 2019.10 (unlocked), my GPS says "Maps are corrupt and cannot be userd."
    Many thanks
