Is that a typo? because I said 1859.

Also is the firmware what it was (500), or what I changed it to so I could upgrade (550) ?

It updated when I changed it to 185901000550.rgn, but the unlocked City Navigator maps that work with 60csx still don’t work with this.

Ok, so what happened was i was using an old MapSource version with my old 60csx, but when I purchased the Garmin Topo DVD, that installs Basecamp with it’s maps.
Then the old MapSource maps show up as well, so I sent City Navigator to the 64st with Basecamp, and the file written to it ends up only a few Mb.
No way that image could have the map data in it! I read that the current Basecamp can have issues sending some maps, and I did let mine update.

So next I used an old patched version of Mapinstall to send City Navigator, just as I would with the 60csx, and this time it worked
So now I’m in the middle of making an image the same way, with the data I really want, which is my purchased Topo map.
I never got that working the proper way with unlocking online. It says online that the maps are unlocked, but in Basecamp they stay locked.

the right HWID of GPSMAP64 is 1859.
You don't need any .rgn file, the device doesn't have GSV protection.
Simply load a Patched Firmware using WebUpdater.

Well it loaded in the end anyway. What’s GSV protection?

I’m in the process of making individual img files to find out which product is causing trouble.
It’s probably the real one from my Topo DVD that needs gmapsupp.unl.

Hi, just to follow up, the topo map just needed gimgunlock to unlock it, and is now working fine.
    Thanks for the replies

This leads me to another question, but probably for another thread.
    Cheers.

Yes no problem with using an RGN in Updater.exe but as said it wasn't needed with your device.

"GSV" is short for Garmin/gupdate.gcd Signature Verification. Devices with that in their firmware must be initially flashed in preboot with Updater.exe because once a GCD is modified it will no longer work directly as it fails the GSV check. After initial flashing as an RGN (which doesn't require the check), that protection is removed so subsequent later patched versions can be done with GCD, provided no original fw is flashed back in the meantime.

    Ok thanks
Are you saying you can modify a firmware file and it will always work fine with my device?
unless it’s actually ruined of course..... because I used to write little programs to change some elements of the UI graphics, and might want to try that again.

Yes, if by 'firmware file' you're meaning a GCD firmware file. Provided it's healthy, there won't ever be a need to flash patched fw to your device other than directly from gupdate.gcd .... UNLESS of course Garmin introduces GSV protection into later versions.
