    Default StreetPilot and Epoch

I have two StreetPilots, a c320 and a c520. Both of these have served me very well for many years. The 320 is like the proverbial axe - 2 new screens, 3 batteries, 2 mounts. They have good screens, readable in sunlight, and are ROBUST, and like "old" mobile phones, they do just what they are designed to do and nothing more - they navigate.

I now have a DriveAssist 51 so I can use the StreetPilots for more menial duties. Unfortunately the c520 is as useless as a paper weight - its firmware is incompatible with the recent epoch change. It boots, slowly, but doesn't have a clue what the date is, so lots of features do not work. Curiously the c320 continues to work properly.

Does anyone know if a firmware patch was made to fix this? Maybe it was not worth the trouble, but it is worthwhile to me if there is a patch. Maybe the c320 firmware will work in the 520?

btw: I did buy a Nuvi years ago - a good one with lots of features - and a nice soft rubber feel about it. The rubber feel soon turned to chewing gum and attempts to fix it were unsuccessful so into the rubbish bin it went. I would have thought Garmin engineers would know better.

It's worth a try asking so if anyone has an answer it would be very much appreciated.

If not the paper weight will make an interesting conversation starter.

Garmin GPS Week Number Rollover Statement
What is the GPS Week Number Rollover (WNRO)?

The GPS system is world-renowned for its ability to provide accurate and reliable positioning and timing information worldwide. The GPS satellites transmit to users the date and time accurate to nanoseconds. However, back in 1980, when the GPS system first began to keep track of time, the date and time were represented by a counter that could only count forward to a maximum of 1024 weeks, or about 19.7 years. After 1024 weeks had elapsed, this counter “rolled over” to zero, and GPS time started counting forward again. This first rollover occurred in August of 1999. The second rollover will occur on April 6, 2019.

    Is My Device Affected?

For many years, Garmin has anticipated and prepared for this event. Regardless, Garmin has been performing exhaustive testing of current and legacy devices to determine if they will be affected by the GPS week number rollover. Our testing shows the vast majority of Garmin GPS devices will handle the WNRO without issues.

What is the Effect of a GPS Week Number Rollover Issue?

For GPS devices that are affected, after the rollover occurs, an incorrect date and time will be displayed. This incorrect time will also be used to timestamp track logs, compute sunrise and sunset, and other functions that rely upon the correct date and time. However, the positioning accuracy will not be affected. The device will continue to deliver the same positioning performance as before the rollover.

Thanks for the reply. I have read this stuff from Garmin but it is not entirely correct. Yes, the navigation performance is unaffected, however the device takes so long to establish an initial fix that I have usually already arrived at my destination. The c320 seems unaffected. The c510 is useless. This behavior coincided with the 1024 week rollover so it is reasonable to assume that is the cause.
I would classify the StreetPilots as "legacy devices". Maybe they did not get around to the c510?
I am enjoying the DA51 but there are still useful tasks for the StreetPilots - if they work.

Hello,Sorry I don't know the answer to your question. Just posting to say that the covering on the older Garmin is put on plastics, etc. that over time does that turning to chewing gum habit. Wiping with baking soda mixed with water will remove the sticky. It's a manufacturers coating put on many objects (TV remotes, PC mouse's, etc.) that doesn't age well.
