    Default Deleting preloaded map?

    Hi Guys

    Deleting preloaded map?

I have a 64st, which in Australia, comes with Aus & NZ Topo v5 LITE... but I have the same product that is not the “LITE”, but the full version.
So is there any reason not to delete the LITE version to free up space, and more importantly, the total number map tiles present in the device?
I could use the extra space and the extra map tiles that could be freed up on the unit. The topo product uses a lot!

If so, which files to delete exactly? I think I know, but just want to be sure, and if any changes are needed to any other files.
    Cheers, Art.

You have a microSD slot so i'd use it. Put the V5 on a card in a Garmin folder, use only naming of gmapsupp.img. I doubt you'll exceed the total tile limit which in GPSMAP 64st is ~3,000 segments I think. Only do that if you can deselect the OEM V5 LITE or you may get conflicts anyway. Always best to have 'unofficial' mapping on a card, if it causes problems just remove the card. If it's in the internal memory and faulty it might brick it

    OK, thanks
The idea was to keep the slot free for a product card, but it’s making more sense now to do things differently.
Yes the Top LITE built in map can be deselected. Garmin have apparently said it’s ok to delete any map other than gmapbmap and gmaptz.
For gmapprom, I might just try renaming the extension so it doesn’t get found.

... Actually, when I moved all of the maps to SD card (gmapsupp.img, gmapsup2.img, gmapsup3.img, etc.) none of them worked!
Though the card is visible as USB mass storage device.

EDIT,,, it would help to put them in a folder called Garmin Doh!

Renaming the topo lite file's extension to one unrecognizable to garmin's OS will work just fine and is actually more permanent because if only de-selected, sometimes the primary detail (OEM) map will be automatically re-selected after a reset or if you boot it without a map in a card.

I probably could have put the reasoning for using a card a little clearer in post #2. It's no problem to have the OEM mapping on board in the internal memory, in fact other than detail maps all the others (like base map and time zone map) HAVE to be stored internally. My point is that when you get unofficial maps from any source other than Garmin or it's authorized stockists you cannot be sure if the files have been altered/unlocked in a way that will stop them loading properly. "Loading Maps" can be seen on the screen of most devices during the boot process and if one map is corrupt or faulty the device will 'soft brick', i.e. stick on the logo screen, do an endless boot-loop or suchlike. Therefore, keeping such maps on a card is safest. If a map on a card should cause problems like that, removing the card allows the device to boot up and operate normally. If that same map is internal then cure firmware in most cases must be loaded as an RGN file in pre-boot mode to re-enable mass storage mode (which is usually not available to a bricked device) so that the map can be removed, then original firmware loaded again. I did a tutorial (different Nick, in an aussie forum where i think you also post) explaining the process in detail, it's a stuck thread in the garmin section there, it will explain fully. So much easier to just pop out a microSD!!!

Lol, you're not the first to not fully read info but again i could have been clearer and could have added to P#2 "So you have this path x:/Garmin/gmapsupp.img". Probably 'any_name.img works for your device too and it likely also supports a folder named Map in the card (path x:/Map/wotevayalike.img) . However "gmapsupp.img" naming is universally accepted in all garmin devices which support a media card in a Garmin folder but gmapsupp may not work in a Map folder.

When using multiple 'unofficial' maps, I'd suggest to have just one each on separate little cards. It's quite unlikely you'll need more than one at a time usually anyway and it reduces the chance of bricking problems as said above. "An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure".

Hi, I wasn’t blaming you. I was quite into some other Garmin units, so should have remembered
Yes, maps are on SD card now, and the preloaded topo lite is deleted now, but backed up on another card.

The 60csx managed with 3 map sets loaded (in a single img file in that case)... just not all selected at once.
It did fine for a lot of use, so I’d hope this one could handle a few sets of maps at once (and also not always selected).

It would be me on the Aussie forum, but it just went really quiet some time ago. I have not had any interest in Garmin stuff at all for some years in-between these two units.
