    Default GPS for Bicycle trips.

I have several GPS units, 62st, 401, and Explorer, and we (wife and I) are purchasing a pair of trikes to do paved trail biking, as versus off-trail or MTB.
I'm hoping somebody has some experience with using Garmins on a 2 or 3 wheeler and would venture an opinion as to if the Garmin hand-held GPS's are worth trying or should I stay with my Android Smart phone and GAIA App.

I'm 72 and wife is 62 and I want to track mileage and know where we are in case we need to bail, HR monitoring might be nice too.

Your 62st manages most of what you want. I also have several gps models, 60csx, 62s, and latest etrex30x. All works fine for mountainbiking and trail walking. The two newest has ant+ and shows cadence, heat rate and temperature.
I would go for the etrex30x if you need one more gps, relatively cheap, uses AA batteries and is light. Normally I use rechargeble NiMh cells but for multiday walks in the mountains I use lihium AA:s, expensive but light and powerful.
Beeing soon in my 70ies I would only wish better eyes so that I could read the screen better without glases....

    Amen on the glasses.
I'm still leaning toward the Android phone. A Pixel XL so it's got a larger screen, gotta be 5x the real estate. Also I have an external battery pack I can use with it.
Looked at the Gaia app the other day and it's been updated to the point it's no longer familiar. Learning curve ahead.
The Explorer does have the built-in SOS function which at my age is at least a consideration but a phone gives me 9-1-1 coverage while in urban and suburban areas. Since we'll be doing local paved trails that's a 60 to 80 percent solution for us.
