So i downloaded the 2018.20 version of Garmin maps, unlocked. img file, and loaded on to the external memory card of my montana 680. The montana is modded to allow the img files to work.

As the file is just below 3GB, anyway I can reduce that size for just some states CA, AZ, UT, CO. Also I can not find a tutorial, or walk through for loading onto Basecamp, ofcourse if i have the device plugged in, basecamp reads of the device, but need to have similar for PC hard drive.

Have been looking here for 2 days, but can't find it.

My basecamp is modded version which allows for key generated maps to be loaded with j mouse.

You cannot reduce the size of the .img file directly, but it seems you may already realize that. So you can select just CA, AZ, UT, CO, obtain the PC map data to load to the PC, or GMAP folder, sometimes also referred to as a 'Mapsource (or MS) Version' and use MapInstall to select the portion required (you can invoke MI from BaseCamp or work with it directly). The map data is in the form of a .gmap folder which is placed in C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps [if you can't see 'ProgramData' go to Control Panel>File Explorer Options (or Folder Options, depending on OS version)>View and enable the radio button for 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives']. The .gmap for NA 2018.20 is available in Post #2

however the latest is 2019.20 and the MS version [same thing] is posted

Hi Thanks for the reply. Downloading the gmap files now. Will place in the folder as advised.

Hi I did that, and was able to upload sections of the city navigator that I am going to need. But all the POIs are not uploaded, which data from the MS files has that?

Any POIs embedded in the map data are included with the compiled .img file, there's no need to do anything separately.

I am lost here. So I loaded the MS files, and not the .img file. The details seems less, not only do the POIs don't exist, but the street level detail is less. So I seem to be missing data. I think I need to load the MS file and the .img file.

When I loaded the MS file, basecamp asked for the map to be unlocked, I used the mouse to do that, and that is working now, and can select the map regions that I want to be sent to the device. But the detail is less.

Is there a step by step how to for dummies here, I don't want to waste people's time.

There may be a problem with the .gmap folder you downloaded, try another source. The unlocking method you used was reliable in the past however I haven't used JetMouse to unlock data in a patched version of BaseCamp/MapInstall for some time. Perhaps there are limitations in latest versions of those programs which cause problems when you've used JM. I prefer to use UnLock MapSource Directory to unlock the .tdb file for use in unpatched original MI. Look in the Tutorial Index.

Superb advise, what you suggested worked like a charm. Thank you, thank you.

So with the unlock mapsource application, I don't need to use a patched version of basecamp? But I still need a patched device, mine being the montana 680

They are two entirely different problems with different solutions:
    (i) Patching MapInstall and BaseCamp simply allows you to unlock PC installed map data with JM and also send map img files to any drive, not just devices and media cards.
(ii) Patching modern protected device firmware allows use of unofficial/unlocked maps when with original firmware they would be unusable and the device would report on boot "Can't authenicate maps/Maps are corrupt", or similar message on screen.

Be aware that there is a problem using patched fw on Montana 680t, to workaround it after loading patched firmware you must reset the unit and disable Geocache Dashboard in map settings. If you don't do so before using an unlocked map the unit will lock up when the unlocked map's selected.
