Help I tried updating my nuvi after many years for a trip this week. My noobish questions are within.

I'm sorry if these are basic questions, but it has been almost a decade since I last updated my Garmin GPS and it looks like much has changed!

I downloaded the CN North America NT 2019.11 gmapsupp.img and tried several guides involving cGPSmapper, GMapTool, or MapSetToolKit to load the image into Basecamp, MapSource, or MapInstall so that I could do a partial map load (only load US states) to the devices, as my nuvi 3750 (my newest Garmin GPS) didn't have 2.68GB free. Since I couldn't get any to work after several hours, I caved and stuck the IMG on a microSD card. It works, but is not ideal, since the 16GB card must be inserted for the GPS to be functional. Is there any way to accomplish what I tried to do? I remember being able to select which parts of the map to load for a partial load the last time I updated, but don't have the guide I followed all those years ago. After not using the GPS in over 5 years, I finally dug it out and need to update it for a longer road trip this week because my phone overheats/locks/doesn't work properly when using the GPS for just 45 minutes. However, I have been unable to find US-specific and Canada-specific images for 2019.11.

For older map versions, I've come across 3D, JCV, SID, SQLite, ASR, and DEM releases and variations thereof, but not for 2019.11. It sounds like 3D = 3D view of buildings, JCV = junction view, SQLite = related to traffic, and ASR = voice recognition/voice commands, though I can't figure out what SID or DEM are. What happens if the 3D/JCV/SQLite versions differs from the version of gmapsupp.img?

Third, is it common to find extras online to load onto nuvis, like general POIs? As far as North American POIs go, I saw the .GPI of safety cameras posted on the forum, but have not found much else. I thought that that would include things like local landmarks, businesses, gas stations, stores, and points like that.

If I have a 16GB card, what else can/should I load that would be useful?

    Thank you!

I'm a new member so I'm just now seeing this but I just did exactly everything you did! I was able to do a partial map install of the 2019.11 on a Nuvi 42 with mapinstall. it gives you the option on the second screen.

let's try to answer your 3 questions:
    1° question
Although it is possible to create PC version maps from an IMG (the process is technically called Reverse Engeneering) using GMapTool, such converted Maps must NEVER be used to create MapSets. In the conversion phase, the Search by Address function is lost.
For these things you MUST ALWAYS use Native MapSource map versions.
    2° question
    - 3D = 3D view of buildings
    - JCV = junction view
    - SQLite = related to traffic
    - ASR = voice recognition / voice commands (they work ONLY with Full Map North America)
    - SID = related to traffic and special address search function (NOT actually used by your Nuvi 3750, it uses instead .G2S File)
    - DEM = Digital Elevation Model (ie 3DTerrain)
Each Maps release has its own additional files, if you use those of a previous version they simply do not work.
    3° question
Excluding the POI related to the Safety Cameras, all the others should be included (more or less) directly in the Map.
Other personal POIs can be found online on sites like PoiPlaza for example
