Since we switched to another provider, we no longer have a landline.
We consciously made that choice because we were rarely, really only called by those extremely friendly Microsoft employees, by family or acquaintances there.

I haven't had them on the Smartphone yet, but just listen quietly, make sure it's not a collect call and wait.

I assume it won't take very long for them to drop out themselves

... a simple always on telephone 'answering machine' that asks for a "return number" gets rid of them.

I record my messages with the 'computer voice' on my Mac so that no 'social engineering' takes place either!

Hi there, just to add my 2pennorth...when I get calls like these I just say "hang on a minute while I find my credit card", put the phone down and pick up the newspaper..after a couple of minutes I can hear a voice from the phone getting peed off and it goes dead....sorted!

I find that they ring off if I say "Just hold on while I get my tape recorder going to record this conversation"

Or, "Aren't you the lucky one as normally I just tell cold callers like you to fcuk off, but in your case..." then click!

I totally cannot understand why you all hate so much and keep trying to fool them, those nicest Microsoft employees.
They have warned me many times and helped very well and patiently to keep my computer clean.
Only they could never answer my question how they could see that my ZX-Spectrum 48K, not connected to the internet, contained so many wrong things.
I couldn't even thank them for it, they were probably in such a hurry to be of service to someone else, I just heard a click.

And now they have also found my mobile number, all previous calls came in via the landline
Great service from those people to put so much effort into helping a total stranger to them.
By the way, they are using local numbers.

I no longer use a landline, haven't done for years, but when I did I found the words "I don't have a computer" in the answering machine seemed to stop them.
No "Hello, you have reached..." or anything else, just those words.
Many times when messages were checked only the sound of someone hanging up could be heard.
After a while word must have got around inside their circles I was a 'no sale' and eventually the nuisance calls stopped altogether.
Before doing that it got so bad I refused to answer the phone if it rang, letting everything go to the answering machine & turning it's volume down so I couldn't hear it, checking it at my leisure.

Registering my number with the Australian government's pathetic do not call register was a complete waste of time.
How that works is it requires the telemarketers to send them a list of who they want to call, so the register's staff can remove the registered numbers from it, then return it to the telemarketers with the registered numbers removed.
I'm sure you can imagine how well that worked...in fact I believe the calls got worse after registering my number...
