    The XL 335 that I currently have is also a used device and I purchased it from a person who used it in the US and UK. No matter what NC I have and even after resetting, and using different Tomtom accounts, I keep getting a US and UK map update (an old 870 map, of course) as per the latest map guarantee! So I think the map subscriptions are indeed tied to a device and not the account. What do you think?

    You just messing things! The only updates you receive - is FREE Community Mapshare Updates!
    At the time we were bother about them - I was getting these updates for All-around-the-World maps without ANY subscription, and even - without ANY TomTom device - just using my USB-stick with several "fake-account" files on it. and of course -without ANY account there...
    So, your previous owners accounts for this device - has no any deal with updates you receiving, nor with real activation of these maps (can upload fake-activated map, not bought - from latest 995 release - and you'll get these updates!) ...
    YOU HAVE NO SUBSCRIPTION TO THESE MAPS!!!!

    Wanna proof? Just PM me - and I'll learn you how to do this... easy!

    As much as I want to agree with you, Rusigor, I cannot :-) The US map I am getting is 1.4 GB and the UK map is 275 MB. I am quite certain these are not mapshare versions. These are indeed the 870 versions since the one that cam with the device were probably one quarter earlier ones. And this device came with the latest map guarantee that the previous owner did not use for almost two years.
    Agreed these are not subscriptions. But these are real maps from Tomtom - tied to the device.

    So what? Many years ago I also bought 720 with map of USA and one-time latest map guarantee... But when I connected it to TTHome - it said "this option (voucher, or what it was there) almost expired" - and no map Upgrade to latest version was possible. Moreover, when I created TT account (this was 1-st account for device, as it came in new condition (maybe refurbished?) - it hadn't show me any map, tied to this device (NAV2 had this option only if device was pretty young, or you officially bought the map through map shop later on, prior to NAV3 devices, where account will show you everything, ever bought for this particular Serial Device Number - registered on TT server...

    Yes, map of course was registered to device - they cannot sell device without any map. Your 870 maps (more than 6 years ago) will be left with this 870 version, and no free upgrade possible (as this option worked only about several months after device was bought). And bearing in mind, that TT discontinued most of NAV2 devices - you even can't buy 1 year map upgrade service - just go to TT map shop and check it up in the bottom of page with particular map - entering 2 first symbols of your device - sure you will see "We have stopped sales of map updates and other services for this model.Read more about it here.". But what the aim using 6.5 years old maps? Read this forum and use appropriate 995 latest maps...

    I'm not sure if I was able to put this forward properly -

    1. I have no interest in the USA or UK maps.
    2. When I first connected the device to TT home, I was also presented with the same warning - your latest map guarantee has expired because it has been more than three months.
    3. But when I updated the device, I was offered the updated maps - maybe 870 is the wrong number but they were 8xx maps.
    4. I have deleted these maps and I have India (950) and NZ (995) maps installed.
    5. Yet, each time I search for updates, I am offered the 1.4GB US map and 280MB UK and Ireland map.
    6. This behaviour is independent of which TT account I use.
    7. I am certain of two things:
    a. These are not mapshare updates as I received them separately.
    b. These are not the same maps that were loaded onto the device as I was offered these updates even when the US and UK maps were on the device.

    With that, I rest my case. :-)

    I've got something similar that always shows up on my TTH too, it was the newest map that was available under the latest map guarantee which has long since expired.
    It's of no consequence anyway as it's a very old map now, so it remains unticked on my TTH.

    As rusigor rightly says, the map is tied to the unique device ID as that is what the original purchaser was entitled to download because a map has to be included with the sale of the device.
    Either way, leave it unticked on TTH and forget about it...

    Hahahaha! That is what I have been saying that it is tied to the device so chances re, everything is tied to a device and not a username - especially subscriptions like a lifetime map guanrantee. But since it looks like we are all agreeing, maybe we can lay this to rest :-)
